Anyone know the status of DivX's progress towards an AVC codec? Maybe if DigitalAI56K sees this he might shed some light. I've just been curious about this lately...but x264 rocks it out anyway :)

I think that DivX won't make AVC codec.

I'm sure that if DivX had interest in (letting you know about their development of) an AVC codec, you would already know. :p

GodofaGap surely not, don't forget such a (transfer) announcement had to be very carefully planed as it would render every DivX Standalone (Device) useless (and make alot of people unhappy) in a snap :P (so tactic wise it would be better to rush people with like a "Next Generation DivX" announcement)
DivX (Networks) Inc. have been working on their own Video Codec, wich they said in the begining (2001) was better then H.264 @ that time, but since then nothing anymore from that Codec was heared, probably the work on their own Codec has been canceled along time ago as it's not so easy todo a own Video Codec wich is IP prove in our times.
Some of those pre Next Generation ideas seem to have found it's way into DivX 6 such as DMF, so alot changed and it seems a decission has been made to stay with ASP and base the complete ecosystem arround it for a while.
As i said alot of times allready the reactions of DivX Inc in the past months showed that they might fear H.264 and what it became now, they might underestimated it back then, i would say these will be hard times for DivX Inc and if they don't adapt, it could be the end, so indeed they might be cooking on a sister to DivX like "DivX Next Generation" based on H.264 wich still would fit in the rest of their Ecosystem.
But the major question im asking myself is "Whose gonna support it in the future" ?, we are in a different scenario then as it was back the days when DivX was born. Hollywood now supports both major Codecs (official standards) that wasn't the case with ASP back then. If HD-DVD or Blue-Ray player can playback Homemade VC-1 and/or H.264 in the Future why should any Manufacture then still license DivX or Nero and produce special H.264 Standalones and another question do you wan't two SAP in your Living Room ? nobody want's that so one of the two formats we seeing fighting @ the moment HD-DVD or Blue-Ray are gonna win might it be in form of the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 or a good old Standard SAP so why a DivX/Nero Player above those if all of those Hollywood solutions are able to playback what we wan't (technicaly) it makes no sense, the only sense it would make when Hollywood, DivX and Nero would agree on a consense here that says something like ok we won't allow the public to produce HD-DVDs with H.264 or VC-1 but you DivX/Nero have to pay us licenses that you can market your own Standalones to Manufactures :D and be sure if that's gonna be the case what's going on @ the moment behind the curtains you gonna see everyone here bringin the right to playback our Home H.264 and VC-1 stuff on those Devices with all FORCE that we have and we gather that force @ the moment worldwide also on a Political Sector, to stop this missuse of Future Technology.

This is nonsense. None of the devices will suddenly stop working when DivX would announce an AVC codec, nor will DivX6 stop to function on anyone's PC. They already made some sort of break with tradition through DivX Ultra certification anyway. The profiling system they have is in practice easily extendible: a DivX AVC profile could be added just like that. The problem is, that DivX might have come too late with the whole DMF thing. It is an illusion to think that any kind of technology/content delivery system will last forever, but, while as of yet the only real alternative for DMF (if it itself can be considered one) is DVD, hardware vendors are obviously focussing on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, not DMF. (as you have said)
But this will greatly depend on a. if the technology to author our own HD-discs is in place within a reasonable timespan, b. if this is not too expensive and c. if quality of authoring tools is high enough. But my guess is that we have to wait for maybe 3rd gen. HD-DVD / Blu-Ray players to see how everything works out. As for now, I can't say I'm not very much impressed with either format.

I meant not render useless in terms of stop functioning (sure it would still be able to play DivX 6 (First Generation)) i meant it more on a psychological level, you know if you rush people with a change most of the time they don't cry about it (feeling forced to adapt also called the early adopters syndrome ;) ) and don't start thinking to much about it but if you do it slowly with an announcement before it's gonna be more problematic for them.
An as i said if Hollywood found consense with DivX/Nero we never gonna see Homemade H.264/VC-1 on any HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Standalones just Mpeg-2 as it's allready possible to master and H.264/VC-1 would be (technicly) also no problem but would render DivX (if they move to H.264) and Neros Home Cinema Hardware stuff useless (who would need those DivX/Nero Asian Boxes anymore, no one :P)
You would just need 1 Device and that would have allready a fair new Codec @ work don't forget with ASP it was a complete different Situation it wasn't inside DVD Players @ that time H.264 and VC-1 are now profile standardized inside them as easy as Mpeg-2 so their would be no demand anymore for such Asian Cheapo boxes as @ the time with DivX/XviD.
Also that DMF could survive vs IHD and BJ is wishfull thinking so Hollywood could bring DivX Inc and Nero into trouble (at least with Hardware Device sells) when they gonna allow Homemade stuff and im not sure if DivX/Nero are so happy about this Situation (it would be alot of income lose from SAP licenses) :P
But for us the customers it would be much easier just 1 Device would be needed might it be a XboX 360, Playstation 3 or a Standard SAP, wich would give great Homemade visual quality for a long time :)

there were screenshots of divx having an avc codec, so they surely worked on it.

I'm sure a VFW H264 encoder from DivX will receive a warm welcome on Doom9!

Perhaps you should start read around a bit before stating such a nonsense.

Some of the features of h.264 are not compatible with VfW.

...Unfortunately. But it's still certainly not "bad."
Remember, what's "best" is always subjective ;)

Ok folks, I didn't intend this thread to turn into another VfW and H.264 discussion thread, which I see is where it's headed. I merely wanted to know the status of DivX's progress towards an AVC codec. Other than the screen shot of the video compressor list in VDub which shows a DivX H.264 codec, is there any other info. available on this? I tried looking in the DivX forums a few days ago but since they overhauled their site I can no longer even FIND the forums.

What if someone writes a PM to the user ***** who works for DivX Networks and posted from time to time in "Divx" section?

Thanks bratao!
There's something weird with the forum though.... I see all the posts made by Digital56k (usuing the search function), but if I go to "divx" section I see only one page of posts (and none from digital56k).

Episodio1: Every subforum has its own display options.
click for example at the bottom of the DivX Section on the dropdown menu "From The" Beginning followed by "show threads" and you'll get all your wanted threads :)

*^_^*
I was freaking out for the last 20min when I discovered the same problem happened in other subforums but not all of them. xD
Thanks.
PD: Why would someone want to see a few posts in a subforum but all of the messages in another one?
