I have to purchase replacements for BenQ's 162I which has the Book Management exe. for burning in DVD ROM.

There are no BenQ's in the stores here in Canada as the optical drives BenQ phone support indicated are phased out and back to the Lite On Company.

Thus I have to find brands of external burners that have automatic bit setting. I purchased a Sony drx 810 UL, the last one with usb 2 and fire wire after talking to Sony phone support who said the model indeed has auto bit setting as long as I use R+ Sony, TDK or Verbatim and not Fuji, Maxell or BenQ as there is a dye issue with these discs that may cause the backup not to play on all standalone players.

We have a Sony drx 820 ul model available here as it is the replacement for the one I bought but Sony was not certain if it was auto bit setting and it unlike the 810 which has both firewire and usb 2 has only the latter.

That really is not an issue as that is what BenQ had and the university children had no problems with that.

They need external burners that have auto bit setting so they can do DVD ROM burning and so I thought I would post a direct question re this.

In Canada the sales reps seem to be in the Dark Ages when we talk about Book Management or Auto Bit setting, so I am hoping members/mods here can suggest models to look at.

We are quite limited to what is available and we don't want to adapt a internal to an external enclosure as the children simply want to have one that they only have to refer to one site for firmware updates and don't have to worry about any enclosure changes etc.

I look forward to comments on the Sony that I bought listed above plus the 820 ul and any other suggested external models that I can google and research stores out.
I have tried googling on auto bit setting external drives but have come up with scant info.

I need to purchase these right away as they are already in classes.

Thankyou for your anticipated help.

Best Regards.

To determine the capabilities/limitations of your desired DVD burner, as well as media compatibility, go to:

www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters

Under "Connection Buffer, Bit" click on "More info - Technical" to see the bitsetting capability...

Thx for taking the time to reply. The link looks like what I am looking for, however when i searched and found the lg gsa-EIOL it came up in the Ukraine and I couldn't understand it. Is there a button that I should click on as I could not find one to convert to Engllish.

Also I tried search to find the bit setting on the Sony drx 810ul and the newer Sony drx 820 u.
The former having both firewire and usb 2 connectivity and the latter only usb 2 connectivity and I would really like to know the bit setting if it is automatic or not.
However the Search came up with nothing and all of my googling the models does not come up with any info on these 2.
I look forward to suggestions, thankyou for your time.

I presume you meant "LG GSA-H10L", which does perform bitsetting, according to the information at the link (They've apparently updated the site so that you no longer have to click on "more info" to see that this burner [group of LG burners] does perform bitsetting).

As far as the SONY burners are concerned, if you go to this SONY site, you'll see that SONY won't even tell you if the burner performs bitsetting!:

Hi, the model here in canada for the lg as I went down again today is 16X light scribe GSA - E10L and that is the only one that is available and it is $200 cdn and so I wondered about the auto bit setting as I would want it to be like the BenQ that I did not have one coaster on and in my huge family no one got a family mini dv transfer that their transfer to dvd got that never worked on an R+ media.

As far as the Sony goes those models drx 810 ul and with both firewre and usb 2 connectivity and the 820 u with only usb 2 connection I wanted to know if these had auto bit setting.

I am trying to keep this simple, but seem to be getting nowhere and I apolgize and so my software tech is wording this post for me.
I look forward to comments, thankyou.

I need to purchase 2 burners like my BenQ that had the Book Management exe. that burned in DVD ROM all of the time.
Thankyou.
