problems playing & copying DVD+R to dvd-r

What is the difference between DVD+r and DVD-r and why can't I play DVD+r on my stand alone dvd player? They skip and stall.
Also When I try to copy them with dvd decypter or dvd it improves them a bit but the recording picture and sound still halts and stalls in places. I also get double files.

There are some format differences; usually DVD+R is more compatible because it's more similar to real DVDs, but I guess you're out of luck. Better make sure you buy all DVD-R until you get a new player, unless you can upgrade the firmware somehow. It's really more of a quality of player issue than media differences.

I have 6 different dvd players none are sony. the newest on is a panasonic dvd player/ recorder that is 2 years old the oldest is an apex 1100, also a jvc and lite-on 2002 as well as 1 dvd player and 1 dvd player recorder on the PC computer . The dvd+r disks do not play on any of the stand alones and play poorly on the computer which BTW is just 2 years old also.
This is not the first time I have had difficulty playing dvd+r media. BTW most play dvd-r media very well. All play the commercially recorded/ professional dvd's very well.
I thought SONY used to be the only stand alone recorder/player yhat used dvd+r . I know nothing of macs.
I wouldn't buy dvd+R media to record. I wanted to know why I couldn't transfer the data from a dvd+r to dvd-r media and if there was a way to do this with more success than I am having .
The person who made these particular dvd+r discs said they tested well. for me the picture stops and sometimes the words move at a slower rate/ different rate. They are Imation 16X. I am aware that some types of media do not play in some machines, but my problem appears to be more global.
When I decrypted them with dvdfab and dvd decrypter they played better, but the files were duplicate ie 2 of each file resulted from 1 decryption process. Any clues why? I tried to separate the files by reauthoring but then the resulting disc wouldn't play at all.
One final thing , I cannot use more than 8x recordable material in the emachine recorder. ( need to upgrade the firmware probably) However the disks recorded on 16x media in the panasonic and other peoples recorders play without difficulty.

Hmm, I thought you meant all DVD+R didn't play well. In this case, it might be the particular brand of media, but that usually only affects one or two, like you said; so most likely it was authored badly and somehow incompatible with DVD specs. MuxMan 0.17.4 can detect this, but costs money; maybe one of the mpeg-2 gurus here knows better.

actually I have tried 2 different recorded dvd+r media in the last 3 years (4 disks total) and none worked well or at all in my players. one was tdk the other sony.
