Welcome to the forum:

This is a common result of using inferior or incompatible media. Use this database (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers) to check for brands of media that others are using with your make/model of player.

I can't find my drive in this database. I have been trying to figure out why my back-ups are not working, and I wonder if this is my problem. Mine is a LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S.

I have used many tools and techniques explained here, but I still only have about a 50% success rate. All of them play at first, but eventually the DVD player is unable to read the movie... just like a scratched DVD.

Tof00, if you can't find the answer on your own then you need to supply more information in order for someone to be of any help. What burn speed do you use? What media (brand, selectable burn speed, media code)? With what program do you burn? By "success rate," do you mean failed burns or disks that won't work in other players?

DVD burning basics: don't exceed half the rated burn speed of drive or media, whichever is slower. Use ImgBurn. Close other programs before burning. Use only Verbatim if burning DL disks.

--I normally use DVD Shrink, but I have used DVD Decripter, AVItoDVD, and other programs to create the needed files. My latest attempt was with DVD Shrink.
-- LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S
--TDK DVD-R 1-16x 4.7gb
--I used 1x burn speed
--DVD Shrink launches Nero 6 to burn
--However, I am not being very contious of running other programs in the back ground and leaving the computer alone... I will try that.
--The discs never fail, as I mentioned above. They all successfully burn and will begin to play in the DVD players, but eventually act like a scratched disc and won't finish. My latest attempt was to make a copy of Firefly. The intro movies and menu movies would barely get through. It played choppy and the player almost froze. I watched the last episode, and it played fine for about a 1/2 hour, then the screen started to get garbled and eventually froze and would not play anymore.

You may be burning too slow. Most 16X media wasn't designed for burning at 1X. If your Lite-On is also 16X, try 8X burn. You might also try setting DVD Shrink to output an .ISO file, then burn that with ImgBurn.
