View Full Version : Should I do anything special before burning a protected disc image to dual layer?

I bought House M.D. Seasons 1 & 2 in anticipation of Season 3 (watched the premier a couple nights ago *thumbsup*). I wasn't the only one who needed to catch up: All my friends wanted to borrow it.

No way will I ever let them borrow the originals, so I made a loaner copy set with DVD Decrypter + DVD Shrink. I encountered the "Jumping Boy" protection seen on many Universal releases when making my "shrinks."

Now I'm ready to make my personal backups to reduce my own wear and tear on the discs. My Sony XBR910 set reveals DVDShrink's compression artifacts readily, so I am willing to finally use twelve of my hoarded Dual-Layer DVD+R discs on these (hoarded from hot deals, clearances, and price-mistakes in the past). DVD Decrypter had no trouble making the images, so I am assuming that burning them won't be a problem for IMG Burn. However, the only other Dual-Layer DVD+R I ever attempted to burn inexplicably ended up a coaster even though I did EVERYTHING short of making a fresh install of Windows first (uninstalled most applications, defragged, closed uneeded processes, made a test-burn and everything on a high-end system with a semi-fresh install of Windows XP Pro). I don't want to repeat my failure from last time, and I never figured out why so I will be burning these on a dual-core 2GB DDR2 system with a Plextor drive. Even so, the presence of "Jumping Boy" and the fact that Season 2 is so new, I do not want to risk a bad burn just because I didn't ask.

Now, because I've never done this, please confirm my proceedure (it seems too simple):
Successful rip to ISO+MDS with DVD Decrypter.
Open and burn to dual-layer DVD+R with IMG Burn.

Is that all there is to it? Do I not need to process it or anything? The MDS file or something in the ISO sets the layer-switch the same as the original, right?

While I wait for answers, I'll be getting these ripped for the Portable Media Center so my mom can watch them at work (the purchases were excused as a "birthday gift" for her ;)). Thanks!

Successful rip to ISO+MDS with DVD Decrypter.
Open and burn to dual-layer DVD+R with IMG Burn. That should be all you need to do - Hopefully your DL media is specifically Verbatim DL DVD+R, as they are, thusfar, the only DL media proven to yield consistently successful results...

They are. I was very dissapointed to lose the one I did. :( Unfortunately, since then, I noticed that light from the window was streaming down to the area beneath/behind my desk where they have been in direct sunlight for months (so I hope they are OK). That's why I decided to go ahead and use 'em... claim my warranty if they are bad (no warning about light exposure that I noticed).

Thanks for the help.

Man... the Plextor drive was burning the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL disc at 9x at some points! I threw a d_skin protective cover on disc 1 and had problems but they dissapeared when I removed it (they wouldn't fit in my Meritline 12-disc snap-case with those on anyway). Of course, I'm only playing it in burners, set-top recorders, and Media Center PCs because I don't expect them to work in most regular DVD players. Looks like the sun didn't hurt 'em (unless the other packs were on top).

I guess I'll just let 'em scrub eachother in the 12-disc case. Better than no backup at all.

I don't expect them to work in most regular DVD players. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that MANY newer standalone players can readily play DL burned media (Especially if the media has been bitset, either automatically by your burner, or via user interaction)...
