Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!

CoreAVC is:

1) Typically Faster, esp with a Dual-Core CPU.

2) Image quality is IMHO about on par with everyone else.

3) No support for GPU's yet, but should come soon.

4) Pay Software. Not Open-Source.

5) Doesn't have the filters and extras that FFDshow has.

6) Full support for MBAFF and PAFF


FFDshow is:

1) Unofficially supported by X264. Akupenguin wrote some of the decoding code for it.

2) Has more filters and deinterlacers.

3) Partial MBAFF and PAFF support.

4) Open Source.


Cyberlink is:

1) Supports GPU's.

2) Supports MBAFF and PAFF

3) Pay Software.

4) Doesn't have the extra features FFDShow has.

For AVC decoders, asking this is especially pointless since the decoded data has to be bit-identical on all compliant decoders. So they only differ by peripheral features like speed, "add-ons", price...

Well I don't know in this case because "best" mean "fastest" here ... and speed decoding is objective measure ... ???

Best means nothing.
The best FOR ME would be: free, open source, fast, support for all the features of the standard, postprocessing capabilities, multiplatform, support for GPU acceleration etc...
Also "fastest" is subjective coz it depends on the CPU capabilties of the PC where it should run.
In my case FFDShow/libavcodec is the BEST (coz it matches most of my requirements), but that's subjective coz maybe another person would prefer a faster decoding due to the limits of his CPU power.

I've just tried a recent mplayer checkout (rev19630) and i was surprised in how fast it decodes AVC, sometimes even faster than CoreAVC.
Maybe we need a new decoder comparison...

That would be nice in theory, but not very important, since not many people (even on this forum) know what you mean when you say "checkout" and even those who know, in their majority wont bother with the pain of it. No matter how good, if it's not in a 1-click installer form, it may as well not exist as far as the greater user base is concerned.

People willing to give up MPC (or whatever else) for mplayer aren't easy to come by, especially away from *nix world.

lexor, MPUI is basically the one-click install and gui of mplayer. And it's not bad, though it lacks some polish.

Although I test the avc performance of every ffdshow check-in (and occasionally mplayer nightlies), and have never seen such improvements with HD video; the benchmarks have improved by about 10-15% in the last 4 months, whereas coreavc is still more than twice as fast.

Still, ffdshow is fast enough to play everything I need it to, so it's all I use.

I can't start mplay for a message error:can't locate pthreadGC2.dll!!!

I download pthreads-w32-2-7-0,then I have extract this file and I copyed pthreadGC2.dll in C:\windows\system32.Now is ok.I test a ts file(h264):video is much fluid but it is slow(and audio goes out sync!!)

I test it.It is bad for h264 ts file(after a few of seconds video block!!!)!this mplayer http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/ is better(it is fluid but slow).So I prefer coreavc codec(are fast)

I test it,but video blocks!!!Write:too many video packets in tghe buffer.maybe you are playing a non interlived stream file or the codec failed?For avi files,try to force a non interlived mode with -ni option!!in this mpayer:http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/ tell the same,but video doesnt' block:it is fluid but slow!!

I do regual builds of mplayer from svn source and run some H264 trailers from Apple. Playback was not fluid three months ago on my laptop (Pentium M 725A) with mplayer, but fluid with CoreAVC 0.0.0.4. Latest mplayer will decode the clips in question fluid, but still with more CPU load than CoreAVC 0.0.0.4. So in my opinion, libavcodec is not able to beat CoreAVC in terms of speed unless something is broken on your direct-show system.

It was due to VMR9. Using Overlay coreavc 0.0.0.4 is faster than mplayer.
However i wont buy coreavc until it supports lossless mode.
