I have stumbled across articles that say that BenQ is on its way out with dvd rewriters b/c of the new technology of blu ray and others.
I have 2 BenQ burners, all uptodate with firmware and drivers and have had the External 162I and the External EW 164 B, the first since Dec 2005 and the latter since April 2006. I use the BenQ Book Management exe. and burn everything in DVD ROM and my huge family with various vintage of dvd standalone players and different brands are able to see everything that I burn.

The units are great, I am in western Canada and am looking for either the Ext 164 B or the internal 1640 that I would put in an external case and can't find anything except the DW 1650 which the retail store was good enough to tell me that it does not run well in an enclosure and that there are outdated firmware issues that cause plenty of coasters as the sales rep loves BenQ as well and bought the 1650 for external use and it has wrecked so many dvd's that he has trashed it.

I am in a dilemma as I don't want blu ray and want to get another dvd rewriter. Here in western canada all that is available is the LG Lightscribe 16X gsa-EIOL at $200 at the Future Shop and the Retail Plus Burner at Staples that I am not familiar with and it retails for $129.

I want a spare burner in case the burners that I have pack it in and I don't know what to do. A year ago I had an LG and a Sony DRU that I would burn to and the dvd's would not work on all of my family's standalone burners when I gifted them with a dvd from my panasonic mini dv tape . Nice presents when people are a few provinces away and want to see a family wedding that they have missed.

I really need advice here b/c I don't want to get caught in being forced into a blu ray and that other technology that is out there and the name escapes me.

Advice would be greatly appreciated and also suggestions of what is a very reliable burner for r+ and r- media of good quality that plays on most standalone burners would be appreciated and also any updated news on BenQ and Rewriters.
Thankyou

I doubt they are on there way out any time soon.

Think about it...you can still buy VHS Recorders/Players for your home if you like(although I wouldn't) and that technology is very old, comparatively.

Regular DVD writers will be around for many, many years IMO.

BTW, I have no burning desire to ever use Blue-Ray nor HD-DVD for that matter.
