DivX Interlaced Playback Problem

I want to encode interlaced footage. And no, I don't want to de-interlace it during encoding. I want to preserve its interlacing.

If I encode with Windows Media Encoder into a WMV, the files plays back perfectly deinterlaced.

If I encode with DivX, then when I play the file I get no deinterlacing and horrible combing.

I am playing using the Windows Media Player and my video card is NVidia.

i would like a media player that deinterlaces too.
I doubt that wmp can do it.
Does anyone know of a media player that can deinterlace divx avis?

Blends is crap. With NVidia and WMV interlaced files, you get silky smooth 59.94 FRAMES per second video, not just 29.97 blended frames per second...

VLC can do it.Sadly... it does not do it very well with MPEG-4 though.

I asked BetaBoy sometime ago if Core could incorporate proper "interlaced" support in their proposed CoreASP decoder, so we'll have to wait and see.

Thankfully though most good stand-alone players "do" support interlaced MPEG-4 even if software players can't ;)

Blend is crap but WMV is worse.

i mostly watch my avis on my stand-alone player but for sharing the files i would like to suggest to people a player for their computer that would deinterlace. I'm surprised such a thing does not exist.

I do suspect Divx doesn't really well handle interlaced material. Just look at all the topics with this problem, and no one ever suggested a solution.
It is that easy: try to encode an interlaced source, with the option to "preserve interlace". You will end up with a badly encoded horizontally fu**ed up movie. It is a silly question to ask: what player should I use to watch it? Any player should read it if it was really well encoded as interlaced. But probably, the interlaced fields are lost, and all the manipulations to read the "divx mess" will lead to quality drop.

You only have two options:
- don't use divx for interlaced material
- use the option "De-Interlace", which will give a perfect quality for common users, but not for professionals/perfectionnists

Unless some of the officials at divx team come and give the truth about divx bad handling of interlaced sources

I tried to play on a divx player standalone, it will play as on the PC.
Also, how could you explain it that MediaPlayer and other players deal fine with all interlaced material, except divx encoded movies?

Also, post processing filters of VLAN won't work, while they work on common interlaced sources. This another argument that divx encoding doesn't keep interlaced information, it just encodes white lines

MPEG2, Xvid interlaced material play just fine
I have some TV channels in interlaced mode
VirtualDub plays them well, also bundled Cinergy TV app. But when encoded to Divx, they came with horizontal lines...

Hmmm...

DivX's encoder should be able to generate "interlaced" encodes in much the same way XviD's encoder can. They're both MPEG-4 encoders after-all....

Are you able to provide (upload) interlaced DivX and XviD samples generated from the same interlaced source?

For me encoding interlaced content with DivX works fine since they fixed the chroma problem.
