Theres some xvid option that autogk uses that produces bad quality on dark areas.
During dark scenes I get all sorts of strange colors appearing in blotches.
I have copied a 2 hour film once at 640 resolution and another at auto
Both films were 1.4 igig and both suffer from this bad quality in the same dark areas.
I tried the same film with simpledivx and this has options for turning these features off

The copy I made with simpledivx was better in the dark areas.

What codec were you using in AutoGK?
What was the comptest value in AGK?

skyn3t, XviD doesn't do a very good job with dark scenes on a good day, and AutoGK's default settings aren't optimized for that. You can use AutoGK with DivX and see if it's more to your liking. You didn't mention if you used SimpleDivX with XviD or DivX, but it's interesting that you can change settings for the XviD codec, something not possible with AutoGK.

Both autogk and simple divx used the xvid codec as I dont have divx installed.
the first film I set the resolution at 640:
Predicted comptest value is: 33.12%
The second used the auto setting 512:
Predicted comptest value is: 56.98%
I made the second film at defauts hoping this 'distortion' would be removed.
I personally thought both copies were very good quality and would have burnt either one if it wasnt for the bad dark scenes.

Whatever this option is I dont think its an essential part of the xvid codec probably just some option that can maybe trim a few mb of the filesize.
I would like too see more options for the xvid codec in future versions of autokg, since its otherwise, the best program Ive used.

I would like too see more options for the xvid codec in future versions Than you can use Gordian Knot and make you own settings to XviD and resolution and other things. AutoGK is automated good process with good settings for XviD and compactibility for standalones, so this compactibility turns off some features like Qpel and make picture looks badly. So if you want quality and you dont care about standalones then you better use Gordian Knot or MeGUI, or even you can switch to x264 or other H264 encoder.
