Hi I hope someone can help I have been having problems with my dvd recorder. I have been using red datawrite 8x discs (optodisc 0r8) for over 6 months now with absolutely no problems, but then all of a sudden over the last two days they have stopped working. When I try to burn an mpeg file on to a disc in nerovision I get a cannot create disc structure error, in recode it stops at 2.2% and in dvd shrink I get a power callibration error. I tried some new discs with an id of aml002 and they worked though a lot slower but I've read around and everyone says these discs are rubbish. Do I have to update my pioneer, if so I have absolutely no idea how to do that but wouldn't that explain why it suddenly doesn't like the discs. In another forum I was told it was the discs but looking around everybody says its a different thing.

Pioneer dvd rw dvr-108

here are some logs from the burn failures I hope they can shed some light on the problem

I have two exclaimation marks in device manager, one is on nvidia wdm a/v crossbar and one is on nvidia wdm video capture (universal). I dont know if that helps, also I have read around that dma should be on (whatever that means) and on the log it says its off in one part. Also when I look in the nero info tool it says I do not have system aspi installed.

I hope someone can help as it must be obvious that I have absolutely no idea what I am doing
thanks

What you've read elsewhere is probably correct. BOTH types of media you are using are of low quality. Try using T-Ys or Verbatim, both of which are of consistently high quality manufacture ("MID"s)...

A power calibration error usually indicates a failing drive. Before you replace it, it wouldn't hurt to clean it with a cleaning disk and update the firmware if possible.

Actually, a "power calibration" error can be indicative of several different problems, including both media incompatibility and a failing drive.

Per the NERO website:9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.

Thanks for replying, maybe it is the discs, but how come the cheapest one has been working? The only problem is I dont have many of those left and I dont want to make originals with them. I might try and update the firmware though not completely sure how to.
Thanks again
