Similar issue to that being discussed in http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=115280.
As per guidance, I've ripped a multi-episode DVD (Family Guy) using DVDShrink one episode at a time so each is in its own folder. Using AutoGK to encode to Xvid @ 75% quality I'm ending up with files that are are almost as large as the original e.g. VOB 1050mb, Xvid 940mb.
When the IFO is selected the details shown in AutoGK for resolution and length are ok. There is no prompt to select PCG, it finds just one as expected.
Have no problems encoding standard mpeg2 files that have been recorded by SageTV. A 3.2gb recording ends up as 1gb xvid with good quality.
I've tried both 2.27 and 2.32, same results for each. Have cleaned up other encoder installs, removed AutoGK and reinstalled everything.
Any thoughts? This is driving me nuts!

I don't quite understand your question - since the file lengths and types are the same, naturally the encodes from each source are similar in size. You may be mistaken about the 75% quality setting - it isn't based on the input, it's all about the output file's quality based on the compression ability of the codec.

Just confirming, the length/play time of the original VOB file and the XviD are the same right? Basically, the output is just that episode, right? If the answer is yes, then it seems the Family Guy episodes aren't very compressible. The output size of quality based compression depends on the source compressibility using a particular codec. In this case, you might have to lower the quality a bit to get a smaller file. Also, how big is the audio portion of the encode? Did you use the original AC3 from the DVD?

CWR03 - I've encoded other Family Guy episodes in the past and have ended up with files around 350mb each time. Also, I would of thought a cartoon source like Family Guy was highly compressible? I tried with and without the cartoon option in AutoGK.
ilovejedd - Yes the play time is indentical for the vob and xvid. Regarding the audio, I tried encoding with auto setting and 128kbps VBR. How can I confirm the size of the audio portion in the Xvid?
One other point to add is that the resulting quality is actually pretty poor, much worse than others I've encoded in the past.

Just checked one of the older encodes that worked well with one of these problematic ones using GSPot, exporting details to file. Only difference between them is:
VIDEO_MPEG4_NVOP N-VOP
is shown for the good encode. Obviously the bitrate values are different, 1976 for good encode, 5750 for the large encode.

The first few seasons of Family Guy were badly encoded. I remember having similar issues when I tried to encode them, large filesizes when doing high quality. Make sure the deinterlacing is happening correctly, I think that they did a wierd job interlacing these DVDs.
Good luck

You sir are a saint! Just ran an encode of a season 3 episode and its perfect, excellent quality and only 260mb. Now I just need to work out why this encode won't work through the SageTV placeshifter while all the other xvids I have are fine! Any thoughts on that one?
