Some time ago I bought the first series of "Dempsey And Makepeace" (Region 2, Network DVD). It played fine until about 5 minutes from the end of the pilot when it inexplicably paused for a second.
I have a Denon 2900 DVD player that hides layer changes completely so I knew that wasn't the problem, so I contacted Network and their customer services department had this to say:
'I have spoken to our authoring department and they have said "This is not a fault per se (as it plays properly on the majority of machines - including this customer's PC - without incident)". It is more an unfortunate side effect of having to place the PG point where it was to accomodate the audio setup of the episode. There are no current plans to re-press the disc as it is not a fault and only some players are affected by a momentary pause, but we will advise him if the situation changes.'
When I pushed further I was told that it was caused by the process used to sync the commentary up to the main programme (never heard of this before!) and that only expensive players were affected. Thus I tried the disc on a friend's player - a budget LG (DA-5620) - and it paused in exactly the same place.
I've tried everything to remove this "PG Point". I copied the disc - same pause. I copied the disc without the commentary - same pause.
Does anybody know exactly what these "PG Points" are and how the heck to get rid of them?
