View Full Version : Converting 5.1 AC3 to 5.1 AAC with Nero on MeGui

Hello,

This is my first post here and I really wasn't sure where to post this, but since I'm a newbie I thought this would be the place...

I've been experimenting for some time with MeGui to encode DVDs in x264 with AAC audio.

I'm having a problem trying to encode a 5.1 AC3 audio file into AAC with Nero if I use 64Kbps. I get the following error message:

Log for job job1

Channels=6, BitsPerSample=16, SampleRate=48000Hz
C:\Program Files\megui\tools\neroAACEnc\neroAacEnc.exe -ignorelength -br 64000 -if - -of "C:\Documents and Settings\jtarrio\My Documents\DVDs\TheDayAfterTomorrow\VTS_01_1 - 0x80 - Audio - AC3 - 6ch - 48kHz - DRC - English - DELAY 0ms_ND.mp4"Error:

ERROR: no valid SBR configuration found

However, I've been able to encode 2ch AC3 files with the same settings. For the 5.1 AC3 file, if I use 128 Kbps, it works fine, although it takes an hour (length of the original AC3 file is 1h58m35s). These are the settings I've configured on MeGui, only difference is the bitrate:

Audio Options:
* Force Decoding via DirectShow: OFF
* Output Channels: Keep Original Channels
* Increase Volume Automatically: ON
* Improve Accuracy using 32bit and Float Computations: ON
* Delay Correction: OFF
NeroDigital AAC Options
* ABR - 64 Kbps (doesn't work) or 128 Kbps (works)
* AAC Profile: Automatic
* Create Hint Track: OFF

Is this normal? Is it possible to have a 5.1 AAC audio track at 64 Kbps? It seemed possible because I've been able to do it with FAAC... However, FAAC seems to ignore the 64Kbps seeting and when I play the file the ffdshow audio decoder configuration applet says it's 192Kbps... And the file size suggests a lot more than 64Kbps... Has anyone had this issue?

Any input is appreciated.

Thank you!

Is it possible to have a 5.1 AAC audio track at 64 Kbps? No, 96kbs is minimum for a good quality (without artifacts) and you can go to 80kbs but that is terrible, encoder can't encode under 80kbs, for 5.1

Thanks! It's good to know... I assume 64Kbps is OK for 2ch audio, right?

use your ears to decide for yourself :)

Yes, and you can go to 48kbs because is aslo good for stereo encoding

I mean if it would work... I can judge the quality only if I can get to encode it...

suggestion-- add mono audio encoding as an option as well. Some movies where the music is not crucial could sound well in mono, and one can get a smaller file size that way, or have less compression for the same file size==better fidelity, just mono. 32kbps mono will have the same quality as 64kbps stereo.

You can already - check the top dropdown box in the audio settings. That said, i'm not sure if it works properly. Can anyone confirm working/nonworking-ness?
