analogue capture: why black and white?

hiya there. im sorry if this has already been discussed, but i'm trying to convert analogue footage from PAL VHS to my computer. i'm using a 'hi-speed USB 2.0 DVD creator' adapter which connects the yellow plug from my VCR to the USB port of my computer. this works fine other than the picture always seems to be in monochrome. i've tried windows movie maker, pinnacle stuio 9 and Ulead VideoStudio6 as capture softwares with the same result each time. does anyone know if there's something i'm doing wrong, or if there's any way around this...? thanks in advance

well, check if the drivers are set to PAL?

This can happen when your capture card is either set to "S-Video" or "Composite" when your source isn't S-Video or Composite. You'll need to change the settings.

Hi Torchbane,
Getting monochrome preview means you haven't set the color(space?) probably. I am guessing here, it is currently set at YV12 which is a no no for this DVD creator by Kworld(?). Try other color setting, the ideal one is YUY2. Go to the settings in Pinnacle or Ulead, the software is NOT told of what capture hardware you have.

Remember I'm only guessing, dime a dozen.

thanks for ur help. i changed the settings to PAL and the picture miraculously came up in colour! but then when i click 'start capturing', it switches back to black and white again and the capture settings have magically reset themselves back to NTSC. anyone know wot's going on here??
