Hello all. I am looking for a simple way to convert a DVD video into a small (a few hundred megabytes or so) video file such as .mpg or .avi so I can watch it on my computer. I have DVD decrypter, but I do not know where to go from here.

Is there any free software that can convert my VOB files down to a much smaller file?

I am sure the answer is around here somewhere, but I have been looking for almost two hours and now I am more confused than before. If someone could even just point me in the right direction, that would be great.

Ideally, I am looking for one piece of free software that will allow me to pop in the DVD and get in on my computer, compressed, in one step. But if no such software exists, surely there must be free software that will compress my VOB files?

AutoGordianKnot (AutoGK).

Have you looked at the Doom9 guides?

AutoGK is one of the few free softwares that can go directly from DVD to .avi file. Quality control is completely up to you - you can take a movie to almost any size from a few hundred megabytes to over 2GB and maintain near-DVD quality. You will have problems with Ripguard- or ARccOS-protected disks, which can be ripped beforehand with RipIt4Me; AutoGK should be able to handle the rest.

Thanks.

It's taking two hours to convert one VOB file. Is this normal?

Don't know, since you didn't post the details of the file. It can take time, 2 or 3 times the run length of the file isn't unusual.
