Matrix and shapness help needed

I've been converting dvd-movies to avc hp (x264) for a long time now, but there are 2 things always bothering me:

Sharpness is not much,and i am not able to make out which matrix to use, the textures appear blocky, especially those like wall textures and pillars, can anyone advice...

I usually go for 1000-1600 kbps, with hq slow profile option...

Try EQM AVC-HR.

First set Bframe predict mode to none (instead of spatial, temporal or auto) and see if that fixes your problem, then if your not satisfied with those results try a cqm and custom deblocking settings, deblock -2:-4 should work well.

mine was not a recomendation... just a "try that" coz some of his parameters seem to fall within the ranges where my matrix should "work" as expected.
feel free to suggest other, maybe better, solutions.

Why would you want to disable bframe direct mode ?
It caused a lot of problems for me when I was encoding revenge of the sith, X264 kept putting b predicted blocks in really stupid places, like on someons face while the were turning their head, disabling bframe direct mode completely fixed the problem. Now granted this was an older build, but it is worth a try, especialy considering how smooth revenge of the sith is cpmpared to most films.

ok, thanks. what bitrate should i use for this matrix, also, should i set deblocking to -2,-1 or -2,-4???

Well Deblocking is subjective, I like how it looks with a setting of -2:-4. I recommended it because it fits into your bitrate range pretty well.
