Access violation - - what to try next????

I have read some other threads regarding this and I yet to find a solution for my case? After many weeks of reading and trying I decided that I have to ask what I could possibly be doing wrong.

Sorry if this has already been answered.


I have ripped many movies now and have finished one. I have tried 4 pass VBR and one pass VBR. The one that finished worked with one pass VBR with default settings. I have yet to dupplicate this. As far as I can tell my rips are good because I can open them up in DVD2AVI and preview them. I get to about 40% - 70% encoded in CCE before something happens.

Two things happen

1.Program Handle not found, terminating program.

2. Avisynth -- access violation.



System
PIII - 700 Pentium
Board - Super Micro - Super P6SBU based on Intel's 440BX chipset
Ultra2 SCSI & DMA IDE Drives

512 meg RAM

Bios settings - set to power management off


W2000K - All updates and DirectX 8.1 (Reinstalled)

Possible solutions or place to look? I am running out of ideas.

Go to your cce tab and direct dvd2svcd as to where you have installed cce.

CCE 2.5 is loading correctly. It does run through 40%- 70% of the movie before it errors out. The part that it does encode is very good. I can load the encoded file in DVD2AVI and preview it. For some reason it hangs up. I am using one pass VBR.

I think in another thread it was stated to try Q factor of 1 and this also resulted in the same problems.

Any other ideas?

I'm not sure your problem is identical to mine; my CCE encoding stopped at various points of the process and the output file displayed a "Avisynth: caused an access violation at xxxxx.....". If I tried to play the .AVS file in Virtual Dub the same error was displayed.

The solution was to replace one of my RAM modules. After that, everything worked just fine. The problem showed up in DVD2SVCD only, I had no other problems whatsoever.

Hi!

I have this stupid Avisynth problem and I want to get rid of it...
DVD2SVCD seems to run perfectly and it finishing it's work etc...
but I have noticed that CCE will speed up after some encoding time...
I'm not getting any error message etc.. but now I'm sure that when this happen...the work is rubbish afterward = Avisynth: Caught Accsess violation...

It's really amazing if this problem is produced by memory chip...???
Hard to believe...
Can we fix this any other way than buy new HW???

Well, I haven't heard about any software that could bypass a hardware error (well except on some server systems perhaps). Nonetheless, CJM and I have been doing a lot of testing today, and as a last resort we tried to switch his memory modules, then apparently everything works perfectly. So my suggestion to you is, see if you can't borrow some memory modules from a friend, just to see if it isn't what also cause your problem. And that goes for all that has this problem.

I do have 512 meg so I will pull half of it out tonight and see if that fixes the problem. I was thinking that could be the cause of it. I will post my findings after I test it.

Well I ran the test that mrbass suggested. I only had over 5000 errors. :-) I pulled 256 meg out and reran the test resulting in 28 errors. Looks like I will be buying some new ram tommorow.

Kent I suggest that you run the test. The test was very easy to run, just allow some time At least ram is cheap.

rayman...that's too bad. But if you got time and didn't return that bad memory module test out doc memory...link in the newbie faq. Do both of them work just as well? I haven't a clue. I just read great things about memtest86 and nothing about doc memory.

Kent Juurikivi--- you have divx..gordian knot, etc. installed. A few people that have other versions of avisynth installed it conflicts perhaps...registry? Not sure myself.

Tonight I am going to pick up some new memory. The memory that I had in the machine was the cheap generic stuff. I am going to run the test tonight on the new memory that I pick up to ensure that the new memory is good.

Then I will run the other test and see what I get for results.

I picked up the memory and ran memtest86 agaist the new memory. Memtest86 reported many errors again. So I downloaded the doc memory test and ran that agaist the memory all night and came up with 0 errors. I put the now 768 meg of ram in the machine and am running DVD2SVCD again to see if the errors come at a later point in the movie.

Swap file is supposed to be at 768 meg right?

Any other test recommended?

I had problems running DVD2SVCD and Doc Memory did not reveal any memory problems. I swapped memory around and found out that a bad stick of memory was the problem.

Don't trust the results you get in Doc Memory. The memory may work fine for other things, but it can still fail you during CCE encoding.

Three sticks of bad memory? Think it may be a problem with the mother board or the bios?

You may be on to something there. If the BIOS settings for the memory are not right, it could look like faulty memory. Double check all your settings, and if in doubt, use more conservative settings, at least until you get things going your way, then start tweaking things back up.

I am thinking that I did find the solution to my problem. It will take a few days to verify. Where I bought the memory they told me that I could use 133 mhz memory mods. for my system. Well I finally look up my motherboard specs myself and found out that the board only supports 100 mhz mods.

I have one that is 100 mhz and that comes up with 28 errors while the other chips report over 5000 errors. Now my system ran fine with 133's but when I need to run memory intensive aplications it bombs.

I am ordering a 256 meg 100 mhz ECC chip and I should have that this weekend. I don't care that I have to pay extra to get a ECC chip, I just want to mak sure that I get something that works for me.

I know I made a mistake listening to the guy behind the counter and not looking into it myself, but that's how we learn. :-)

Thanks for all the replys. I will post my findings again when I install the new memory. Hopefully my theroy holds water and helps someone else if this is the case.
