I'm encoding some xvids and have a question about what resolution to use. I'm encoding some DVDs that are 4:3 ratio. Using Fairuse wizard there appear to be two options.

encode at 640x480 or there is an option to use 'TV resolutions' and it choses the resolution of 640x432.

I'm going to be watching the encodes using Xbox Media Center and on a DVD players that plays Divx.

Is there an advantage at encoding at one of these resolutions over the other? 640x480 appears to come out as 1.33:1 which sounds correct but why the option for the other resolution that says its a TV resolution? :confused:

Any ideas? I have alot of encodes to do and want to chose the appropriate resolution before getting them all done.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I don't use Fair use, so all that follow is from other programs.
640*480 will have black bars and you will waste (a little) quality.
640*432 will crop black bars and you will get the maximum quality Fair Use permits/allows for that file size.
Both should play on a divx player SAP, if Fair Use use some specific settings for SAP (which I think it does).

Try by yourself, burn on a +-RW media and see what fits you best.

Nah, the 640x432 is probably to get the ratio closer to 352x240 (VCD aspect ratio). No idea why that's being used, though. Even my analog NTSC captures are at 704x480.

I would definitely go for 640x480. 640x432 is way off 4:3

Ya, anything more than 640 is unnecessary for TV playback.
