Hi!
One method is as follows:
To increase volume of an already created .AVI
Load it into VirtualDub (or one of its variants).
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying".
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode".
Under the "Audio" tab, select "Compression" - Put a checkmark next to "Show all formats". Select the same format, frequency, and sampling rate (e.g. MPEG3, 44,100Hz, 128Kbps) as the original .AVI.
Under the "Audio" tab, select "Volume" and increase to the desired percentage.
Save with a new filename.

couldn't you use VirtualDub mod to demux the audio and then run it through mp3gain and then mux it back with the avi again?

If like me you are too lazy to demux and add a boost or gain then maybe try VLC Player. With the ctrl + up arrow key you can increase the volume about twice as much as other media players.
But, demuxing and boosting the audio is the right thing to do, then you know it will play back ok in other players as well.

Roger that. Avoid decoding and re-encoding at all costs!!
