What's the difference?

Hi all

The forum newbie has a question (me that is)
I have been using DVD Decrypter and Shrink for a while now with success but when reading any guides how to do this (I just kind of worked it out for myself initially) they say when decrypting to rip to an iso. I have just been ripping to file so wondered if there was a benefit to ripping to iso and if so what?

ripping to an image (iso) mainly has two positive points:
1) as you have to mount on a vitual drive to process you cannot by accident delete or alter any files (given you do not intend to).
2) if the movie or disc fit onto a DVD-RW without further processing you can easily burn it straight away.

other that that there really is no need to create an image IMHO.

And on the downside (why you might want to stick to ripping as files rather than .ISO image) - If you want to covert your DVD to a different format, many conversion programs will accept ONLY files for input...

By the way, if you use (freeware) "VLC" to play your .ISOs, it does NOT require mounting to a virtual drive...

And further to setarip's post, you can not edit an ISO (eg strip unwanted streams etc). File mode gives much more flexibility.

However, as you know, DVD Shrink does accept ISO input and you can re-author there.
