"Romeo and Juliet" not recognized, can't rip.

Today I got the DVD "Romeo and Juliet" put out by Ambrose Video (http://www.ambrosevideo.com/displayitem.cfm?vid=817). The disc plays fine in my DVD player, but when I put it in my DVD-ROM drive in my computer, the disc isn't even recognized as being loaded by windows, thus making a rip impossible. I've tried this on 2 different computers with the same result.

While watching in my regular DVD player, it does say it is protected by Macrovision, so I'm assuming this is the cause of the problem. I've cleaned the disc and tried everything else I can think of, but I can't get the DVD to load in a computer drive no matter what I do. At first I thought it might just be a bad disc, but then that wouldn't explain why it plays fine in my regular DVD player.

I appreciate any help in fixing this problem.

You might want to try turning OFF the "Autoplay" function of your computer...

Additionally, try turning your computer off and then cold boot it...

You got a second PC you can try this on? Maybe one at work? Might be your drive is on the way out. Or the disk is marginal and needs to be replaced.

Have you tried other DVD's in your computer(s)? I have one older DVD-ROM that doesn't recognize some disks.

What is your operating system, and is Autoplay for CD-ROM's working? There's a known issue with certain levels of Roxio that will disable the disk change notification and prevent the computer from detecting a disk has been inserted. Try inserting the disk, then reboot the PC and see if it's showing in Explorer.

I have ripped literally dozens and dozens of DVD's in both of my computers, and have never encountered this problem. I've occasionally had problems during the actually ripping of DVD's, but never have I not had a DVD not even be recognized by Windows or any program.

Originally I had auto-play turned on, but when the problem occurred I also tried disabling it to see if it might fix the problem, but without results.

I have also tried leaving the DVD in the drive and then rebooting the computer (both warm and cold boot-up), but that didn't work either.

Although it's apparently a new DVD, if you haven't already done so, try cleaning the disc. If it still can't be recognized by your system, return it to the place of purchase in exchange for a new replacement...

Cleaning the DVD was one of the first things I tried. I went ahead and tried cleaning it again today, but it didn't make a difference.

OK, I exchanged the disc, and still have the exact same problem. In the computer it won't even be recognized, but plays fine in my regular DVD player.

:mad: I too had this same problem with "Transformers: the movie", and the" Star Wars extras disc" from the original trilgoy.
I never did figure it out, I eventually gave up and just protect the originals like they were the Mona Lisa painting. Every once in a while I take it out and try again though with the same results.

Wish I could be of more help on this one, this is the group to figure out the problem though.

Both of my computers have always been able to recognize every other DVD except for this one. As a matter of fact, just today I rented "Dark Water" and it played fine in both computers.

Its always possible that both dvd's you purchased are defective, if both came from the same run. Did you purchase both at the same store?

Yes, they were both from the same store.
