Dell confirms recall of dangerous laptop batteries

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Dell Inc. shares rose Tuesday as the company recalled about 4.1 million Sony-made lithium ion laptop batteries blamed in six reports of property damage to furniture and personal effects.
The Round Rock, Texas computer giant said it does not expect the recall "to have a material adverse effect on its results of operations, financial position or cash flows."
No injuries were reported from the batteries, including 2.7 million sold in the U.S. and 1.4 million sold overseas.
"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed," according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Dell issued a voluntary recall of Dell-branded lithium-ion batteries made with cells manufactured by Sony and set up a Web site for more information.
Computers with the batteries include several models of Latitude, Inspiron, Dell Precision, and XPS.
The batteries were sold through Dell's Web site, phone and direct sales as part of a service replacement program, and catalogs from April 2004 through July 2006.
Consumers can continue to use the notebook computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received.
"Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire," Dell said. End of Story
