I want to backup all my DVDS in avi format. From what I have gathered form this forum and other sites, it is possible to copy avi files directly to DVDs and play them in a DVD player with DivX/Xvid support. I wish to know whether there is any other method other than copying using direct Data method

~thanks in advance

Have you looked at Auto Gordian Knot (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=28)? The second link on that page is Manono's guide, that would be a good place to start.

Hi! seems like i could not describe the problem appropriately in my earlier post. I dont want to convert the files. I have already converted them to avi. The thing is I want to burn these files directly to DVD that is no conversion to DVD (Mpeg2) format. For eg if i have 1,2,3 all avi files i wish to burn all these files directly to DVD. The only method that I could come across which has been suggested in this forum also is to use Data Disk method in Nero. I wish to know
1. Do the new-age DVD players(with DivX and Xvid support) play such DVDs which have files in avi format.
2. whether there is any other method except Data Disc method to burn avi files directly(without converting) to DVDs

~thanks in advance
~sorriez for the confusion caused in earlier post

If you have files in .avi container files, and they are using MPEG-4 codecs playable by these modern players (DivX, XviD, etc.), and they were encoded with resolution, bitrate, and feature limitations suitable for playing on one of these standalones, then yes ... they can be placed on burnable DVD media without reencoding, and played in the player. AVI is a container format, and only a subset of .avi files playable on a PC can be played in a standalone player.

These .avi files are placed on DVD or CD media as data files -- using CD9660 filesystems, if that's any help. You are not creating a video DVD or video CD.

There are differences between players. Before acquiring a particular make and model of player, look up its capabilities in the database at www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers. Most DivX capable players -- DivX Certified, certainly -- can use the DivX enhanced .avi container (.divx), allowing for better control of subtitles and some limited menu authoring.

Yes with some restrictions due to SAP compatibility, put your files on a DVD +-RW and try to play them in your SAP.
2. whether there is any other method except Data Disc method to burn avi files directly(without converting) to DVDs...
Yes, ISO/UDF like in IMGBURN (use the build option) even more media/player compatible than data burn: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=114360

Edit: jggimi was quicker and more detailed than (as he usually is) me for answering :)

Well,

As long as you burn RW media, you can always start over again :)

I just quit Nero quite a long time ago and more recently another freeware burner ( CDBurnerXP Pro 3 (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) ) for ImgBurn. There are a few small guides like: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1779
with some starter explanations on ISO/UDF/JOLIET differences in the above.

You could also use Nero to create an IMG file on your HD and burn it with IMGBurn: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61
