any xvid file i have encoded before the installation of auto gk 2.32b , whether encoded with previous versions of auto gk or with virtual dub, all crash in MPC. the file plays for a split second and then MPC crashes. these files worked fine before installation of auto gk 2.32b

i think this might be because of the codec bundled with auto gk. it is a newer version than the one i had installed previously (feb 06). the one bundled with auto gk is (july 06).

when i open virtual dub, i have 2 entries for xvid compression. is this the problem, or part of it, or a sign there is a problem?

how can i fix this? should i revert to the previous xvid build by re-installing the old codec? or is there an easier way to fix this problem while keeping the newer xvid version?

thanks for your time!

Sounds like you still had XviD installed when installing the new XviD.
Uninstall XviD from the start menu then look in the C:\windows\system32 folder and see if xvid.ax is still there.
If it is type in the run box:
regsvr32 -u xvid.ax

Now delete the files xvid.ax and xvidcore.dll from the system32 folder

Hopefully this will clear your system of XviD and let you install AutoGK properly.

i discovered my problem.

recently i installed the k-lite codec pack from august 13 2006, and it included some sort of divx settings manager that appears when you play ONLY divx movies, or so it seems!

apparrently, it was trying to load itself when i played xvid movies after the installation of auto gk 2.32b.

i disabled the settings manager by renaming it, so that it would fail to load.

my xvid files all play fine now, with the july 2006 xvid codec bundled with auto gk 2.32b.

however, i now have 2 xvid-mpeg 4 codec choices when i load the compression menu in virtualdub. the fourcc on 1 of the choices is 'yv12'. they appear to be the exact same codec, with the same information popup when i click 'about'. its the july 2006 build.

other than that, everything is fine now.

Remove the K-Lite codec pack. The Gordian Knot codec pack is the only one you'll need, and it won't clutter your system with things you don't, or create conflicts with other programs.
