I'd like to use MPC as my default audio/video player, but it doesn't seem to be able to queue up mutiple files when I select them from windows explorer and press return. It just opens the first one from the list.
Is there any way to do this?

Select the files and drag them over the MPC window with mouse. The files are added to playlist.

Modify your file associations to include "/add". Then MPC will add files that you open to its playlist.
See the help menu in MPC for a full list of command line switches.

This works fine, but it needs MPC to be open when selecting the files for the files to be added to the playlist. If MPC isn't open and I select the files, only the first is played - even after the "/add" switch to the file associations.
Is there any way to rectify this?

if you were using firefox, then you could have used the extension Media Player Connectivity (http://membres.lycos.fr/sethnakht/FAQ%20MediaPlayerConnectivity.html) to do just that. I'm using mplayer. but VLC and MPC work fine as well.
