Hi, What do you answer a person that maintains that VoIP is not even practicable in an HSDPA accelerated UMTS network?

I answer a what are you talking about?

Are you asking if VoIP can be run on a UMTS network? The answer is technically yes but in practice no. Cell companies block VoIP.

Mind you there maybe a way to encript the traffic confusing the cellular network.

Hi, Here in Austria UMTS providers are introducing HSDPA. They offer flat rates that make me think of going totally mobile (giving up landline access). It's a purely technical question (and as far as I know, there's no encryption here that artificially prevents VoIP over UMTS): Some "experts" among my friends say that despite nominally good download and upload figures through HSDPA, the specific features of mobile telephony (instable traffic rates, shared channels, latency, whatever, I'm certainly no experts myself) make it problematic to implement VoIP via UMTS. Please excuse the initial lack of clarity.

You will not get a real time phone call using voip over a cell phone or at least I doubt it. You can always try.

Latency, phone, and your traffic rate will determine the results. What kind of bandwidth are they offering?

Yes it can be done but I am sure they will block you eventually.

In the current initial phase they are offering 1,8 down/384 up. BTW I'm not thinking of doing VoIP on a cell phone but of buying myself an HSDPA PCMCIA for my notebook.
