Universal/Imagine release "Inside Man"

I believe this is the first Universal release to contain any "special" copy protection other than "The Jumping Boy".

Just wanted to mention that my Region 1 version of "Inside Man" (which is NOT a SONY, Disney, or Dreamworks release) appears to have a modified version of "RipGuard" copy protection.

Unlike previous "RipGuard"-protected DVDs, it appears that DVD Decrypter cannot, by itself, fully perform an initial rip of this DVD. (Past "RipGuard"-protected releases could be ripped by DVD Decrypter, which substituted the required dummy sectors - and was then simply "cleaned up" by running the DVD Decrypter rip through "VOBBlanker")

On the other hand, the "RipIt4Me" package appears to handle this release perfectly ;>}

It's not uncommon that the same release in one Region has "newer" copy protection, while the version in another Region doesn't have "newer" copy protection - or has a different "newer" copy protection scheme...

I used ripit4me to backup Inside Man, but it gave me an Iso that is 7.9 gigs in size and I need it at 4.35. Is there an option somewhere I may have missed, or should I not have it make an iso?

RipIt4Me only does the ripping part and is a 1:1 rip of the DVD. You will have to downsample (encode) the resultant VOB/ISO to reduce the size of it down to 4.35 GB.

It would seem that you failed to use DVD Shrink during the "RipIt4Me" procedure...

An enhancement would be for RipIt4Me (http://www.ripit4me.org/) to offer to open the ISO in DVD Shrink (if it is not protected - this can be done using Ctrl-I from DVD Shrink).

However, this would not be useful for ARccOS DVDs like Inside Man.

@pabramma - you should rip in one of the other modes (maybe movie only or movie and menus) and then open the rip in DVD Shrink to transcode down to 4.37 Gb.

If "RipIt4Me" is generating an "I/O" error for "Inside Man", you've likely got a poorly mastered or damaged DVD. Return it to the place of purchase in exchange for a new replacement...

Well I had the same problem with ripit4you so I just ended up using dvdfab decrypter then used dvd shrink to just take out the movie itself because if I tried to shrink the entire dvd itself, menus, extras etc. it would get to not even 2% then it would just close dvd shrink completely. I have never seen this before. but with just takin the movie out it worked perfectly.

I just finished backing up the R1 version with anydvd 5.8.1.1 and it seems to have worked fine.

Stone Knife, could you post the ripit4me log when you get this IO error? It's very surprising: from what I've read (and the tests I've run), ripit4me puts a protected sector line in the psl file for all the cells in the DVD, so you shouldn't get any IO error.
I suspect that the psl file was not imported by DVD Decrypter, you could know for sure by looking at the DVDDecrypter.log file (and also the psl file).

Sony licences it to other companies. Sony do have the most affected titles though.

Actually, as I said in the initial post of this thread, I'm fairly certain that "Inside Man" has a new iteration of "RipGuard" copy protection.

I believe you'll see confirmation of this in the post #13 here (by "6RE9"),which provides the following analysis by AnyDVD:RCE protection not found.

Although what "nwg" said may be correct, I'm personally not aware of "ARccOS" copy protection appearing on any DVDs other than those that include the SONY name in some capacity...

I have seen it on Tartan DVD's in the UK.

Hi Jeanl,

I tried this again using RipIt4Me v.1.4.7 (instead of 1.4.6) and ran it from my C:/ drive > Program Files as suggested in the RI4M guide) instead of having RipIt4Me on my desktop.

I also used the Wizard route instead of the 1-click method this time and it ran fine all the way through Shrink.

Sorry to report, I dumped the DVD Decrypter logfile yesterday but what you said sounds plausible. I just remember RI4Me hanging and having to hard power down the machine to get out of the hangup. DVDD could not close.

Summing up, this worked:

RI4Me 1.4.7 running on C:/ProgramFiles/RipIt4Me using the Wizard method on Movie Only including the Step 3b Optional Cleanup (remove protected cells, remove tiny cells, remove last titleset(s) if needed) and Step 4 cleanup with Fix VTS using the default settings.

Big kudos to the "spook(s)" who created RipIt4Me, you are people after my own heart but with the talent and technical skills for DVD programming I clearly lack. I could have never figured this out, my deepest gratitude.

What was saved to your hard drive - was it ONE very large file (7+Gbs) with an ".ISO" extension as part of its name, or was it a bunch of files (with extensions of ".IFO", ".BUP", and ".VOB") in a folder named "VIDEO_TS"?

If it was an ".ISO" image file, from the DVD Shrink "File" dropdown menu, select "Open Disc Image". If it was a bunch of files in a "VIDEO_TS" folder, select "Open"

Found 6.+Gigs of files VOB etc. Selected Open and ran Shrink again. Same result Shrink could not continue becaue of missing file.(identified above):confused: .

Missing File:
c:\inside_man\video_TS\VTS_01_1. VOBIf, in fact, you DO have a directory/folder named "inside_man" that contains a directory/folder named "VIDEO_TS", but the "VIDEO_TS" directory/folder DOESN'T contain a file named "VTS_01_1.VOB", then you don't have a successful rip of the "Inside Man".

I'd suggest you delete the entire directory/folder named "inside_man" (and its contents) and try using the "RipIt4Me" package (RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter/FixVTS) of programs again, before attempting to use DVD Shrink.

**Make certain to use FixVTS after DVD Decrypter and RipIt4Me have "done their thing"...

Thank you for getting me on track. I cleaned up some old files and updated FixVTS. Then, I was able to complete the job. Interestingly, had to skip step 3 of RipIt4me as it casused the job to crash.
