Compressing vids

Hi,
Just wondering if there is an easy way to get say 3 or 4 films on one 4.7gb dvd for use on a standalone player. Have tried a few programs, but they seem to be just over half a disc. Cheers

Hi!Have tried a few programs, but they seem to be just over half a disc.It sounds like you already know how to convert the files to compliant DVD "packages" (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs), but the combined "packages" are too big to fit onto 1 single-layered DVD.

In order to reduce the size of each "package", compress them using DVD Shrink (freeware)...

AutoGk can do it or, Mkvmagic, StaxRip, avi.net, fairuse... This is called Mpeg4 encoding. Be careful about Standalone compatibility, see more here: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=73

Another quick question mate, once ive reduced the size of each film do i just save them then use an authoring tool, or can i just use shrink to do it all. Cheers

should beable to get shrink to do it all for you, though I havn't tried with multiple sources yet.

I you go DvdShrink (mpeg2 transcoding), be aware that, for 4 movies averaging 6 to 8 hours, you will get the conditions of this thread (CCCE: mpeg2 encoding, better than transcoding): http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=114228 or worse :sly:

Much better would be to use the correct bitrate and get them to the size you want the first time. 3 or 4 films from AVI to DVD isn't such a good idea. 3 or 4 films from DVD to DVD is an even worse idea. I agree with BigDid (as usual).

You can't shrink it too much or else you'll get block noise. When you shrink it you're taking away bits. I never compress mine lower than 90% and I like to stay above 95%. It all depends how good the source is. On some sources if I shrink to 90% and I get block noise.

Standalones only accept MPEG2 so you have to experiment with that and come up with low filesizes that are decent quality. I can fit (7) 600 MB MPEG2 scenes on 1 DVD+RW. If it's a VOB I don't convert to MPEG2, I just author the VOB the way it is-it's great quality. I'd rather end up with (4) high quality VOBs on a DVD than (7) so-so MPEG2 on a DVD.
