Converting AVI w/CBR to AVI w/VBR?

An unusual thing happened...my SAP won't play CBR but will play VBR. Most of my AVIs use VBR except for a few that I had to resynch the audio so I had to use CBR for VDubMod.

The question; is there a way to convert it or re-mux it into an AVI with VBR. I know I can use VDubMod to extra and then BeSweet to convert to VBR, but I haven't been able to find a tool that'll let me re-mux it into AVI. My SAP won't play MP4s so I can't use YAMB. Any ideas?

Yes,
VDubMod.
Once your vbr audio stream is done open your movie(avi) in VDM.
Go Streams/stream list.
click on your CBR audio /click on disable
Click on add/add your VBR audio/OK
File/save as/direct stream copy/new name.

Edit: same procedure can apply for discarding a VBR audio stream and importing and muxing a CBR stream (more often)

If you converted them differently than the VBR ones, maybe it isn't that at all, and converting the audio to VBR won't help. But, it's worth a shot; demux your mp3, run it through MP3Repacker (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=40780), and remux that without the original. Then you have your cbr->vbr.

What happened with a few, is that the audio was out of synch due to ACroOs and I fixed them by re-encoding them in Auto GK with CBR so I could fix it in VDubMod. A few others were ones I wanted to join or what have you. Since then I bought a SAP that doesn't play CBR ...go figure. I was concerned that it wouldn't play VBR. Anyway, my understanding is that VDubMod doesn't like VBR ...am I wrong?

I will give both of those a try right now and let you know.

It doesn't like VBR, and even the current ones don't really (avidemux may be a pain, but it's support of such things is much better), but as long as you aren't cutting the file it'll mux and demux fine. Just make sure not to rewrite the header when you load it.

1 - Will re-writing the header cause a synch problem?
2 - Will the audio remain VBR?

I quess i assumed that VDubMod didn't output VBR MP3, is that incorrect?

Yes, among other things. It should work fine if you select "No."

It should have no trouble with VBR MP3 if they're muxed in using direct transfer mode.

You can also use VirtualDubMod to convert from VBR to CBR all-inclusively - I've had no problems doing that. There's no need for all the extra steps of demuxing, using an external program to convert the audio, then adding the new audio and saving it.

I need to replace the CBR with VBR so my SAP will play the audio. Usually it's the other way around. Luckly, 99.9% of my movies are in VBR.

Just wanted to add somethings that might help out someone else. This link was helpful for working with Virtual Dub Mod http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/amvappvdubmod.html#4

I was able to demux my CBR192 stream with VDubMod, then convert to CBR160 with BeLight (BeSweat GUI) and then add it to the original AVI (Disabling the first audio stream) and direct process it into a new file (new name). It will also work with VBR MP3 (I converted the CBR192 stream to VBR192 for testing) as long as you don't change the header when VDubMod promts you. Doing so will cause the aduio to be out of synch.

My issue is that my SAP will not play CBR192 but will play all VBRs and CBR160. This is not the best for quality, but does save time in re-encoding the entire movies, and is especially good to correct a synch issue and still keep VBR. I made the mistake in thinking that I had to change the header when importing AVI with VBR, but that is not the case...Just say "No".
