Hi. I am using Xvid in ffdshow encoder in VirtuaDub to transcode some movies for my hardware player. I have consecutive B-frames set to 2. My hardware player doesn't play files with n-vops. Any time I ran a trial encode of 20 or 30 minutes with these settings, no n-vops. But I encoded 15 hours worth of video with these settings, and each and every file has n-vops.....There is no frame drop ratio in the ffdshow encoder. The reason I use the ffdshow version is because it is faster than standard xvid codec (don't ask me how this is?). How can I get rid of these?

ffdshow can't be faster than standard XviD, since it uses standard XviD. Just a matter of different settings. If there is no way to set the framedrop ratio, then there is no way to control n-vop's. Even if there was, it would probably still create n-vop's.
I modified XviD so that n-vop's get disabled for DXN equiv profiles. That is about the only way to make sure that you don't get them.

Thanks cd. I checked the settings in ffdshow and trellis and vhq were off, and ME was set to 5. So after these settings were changed in Xvid, the speeds were the same, and the results were great. With frame drop ratio at 0, I had 1 file with 1 n-vop, and that file still played fine in my hardware player.
On a side note, I was going for a low bitrate on these files for archive, and with 2 consec b-frames, b-frame displacement at 1, b-frame quantizer ratio set to 1.5, and one-pass quantizer set to 5, with low resolution, these files were especially low bitrate. Even lower than when I used RV10 for archive, and faster encode. Looks like I got a favorite new format. I had no idea that mpeg-4 could do this well at these low bitrates. I mean, with quantizer at 5, and the b-frames at quantizer 8, some low-motion movies have bitrates in the low 100's, outstanding! I can fit 20 files on 1 disk.
