Determining Video Resolutions

Hi. I am archiving a bunch of old backups to low resolution and bitrate xvid for my hardware player with Virtualdub.

Is there any software that will open an avi file, determine the current resolution, and determine lower resolutions for me while keeping the aspect ratio? I am tired of having to figure out the resolution with the calculator.

It would also be nice if there was a program that could figure out bit/pixel/sec calculations for certain bitrates.

XviD allows you to calculate target bitrate/file size in the XviD menu.

Thanks guys. I am not having trouble finding the original resolution of the files, Vdub gives you this. Neither am I having trouble figuring out the resolution to resize it smaller for archive, I do this with normal math rather quickly, but is is tedious for several files. What I want to be able to do is to be able to quickly determine the possible smaller resolutions without having to figure them out manually. I can do it with AVSGEN, but it takes a lot of digging for something I could do quicker by hand. I am looking fo a program that could do this quickly and easily for me. It would be even better if it was able to find smaller resolutions for multiple files, to make less work.

The smaller resolution you resize to the more detail you will lose so try to keep sizes as large as you can w/o sacrificing detail. What type of video is this? AVI? For AVi there are only maybe 4-5 resolutions that are common.

Use GPOT to find your resolution. And it gives you all the other video/audio information PLUS you can look and see what codecs are installed on your PC. Totally invaluable.

What does it take to convince people that he wants to know what resolution to use, not what he has? Hah.

I thought about it for a while, and I don't know of any software out there than can attempt to pick the best resolution given a bitrate and the video based on compressibility and aspect ratio. It'd be possible to make one but I have no real inclination. I know realanime is made for low bitrate/low res, but I don't know how much it automates the process.

(BPF is useless and misleading, btw, only a compressibility check is meaningful.)

wait, vdub has an internal filter called vdubmod_resize, there if you put width or height will calculate the other

Huh, Vdub 1.6.12 doesn't show it either. I'm sure I can find it on the net, but that is strange that it isn't there.

I prefer VdubMod because files that contain VBR mp3 audio tracks don't need to have the header re-written in VdubMod, unles I am mistaken, regular Vdub doesn't give the option.

I downloaded, but haven't tried it on an encode yet. But as long as it is just as fast as the regular resize filter, this is my new baby. Has all of the options I want, and it seems that if I am doing multiple encodes, I can just leave this filter untouched if I go for a percentage and have it round to the nearest multiples of 4x4.

A bit late but it seems you don't have a fully usable answer. So I just would like to point out AutoGK.
Now lossy to lossy cannot give wonderful results but AGK can do it. You can feed AGK with an avi (or VOB or MPEG2). It can re-use the same audio or compress it if different from mp3; if mp3 you have to do it outside AGK.
AGK is a all in one tool so once given a file size for a 2 pass it will calculate the resolution, use SAP settings if provided and make the encode via VdubMod(all auto). Concerning aspect ratio, AGK is using strictly mod16 AR. There are quite a few more options also accessible so it may suit your needs.
