Here's what I would suggest if you want to go the AMD route, though the new Intel Core 2 Duo (conroe) chips will give you much higher performance once they are available in volume. This is a budget system, keep in mind

*AMD Athlon 64 X2 Socket AM2 $150
*ASUS M2N-E nForce 570 AM2 $95
*2x 1GB DDR2 800 $~200 for good timings
*Antec SLK3000 case $~60
*Antec 500W PSU $~70
*video card - GeForce 7300gs if you don't game ($50), 7900gt if you do ($275)
*250GB Hard Drive SATA $80
*DVDRW $40

there's something to start with anyway

i wish people would stop with these generic ridiculous statements. an AMD 4200+, 4600+ or 5000+ will compete pretty good against an e6300 or e6400 in both price and performance.

so unless you are considering getting something like an e6700 or x6800 you do have a choice. oh and from what i have read the e6700 is getting pretty low yields and the x6800 even worse. so dont expect to see either of them in great volume anytime soon.

With my Asus sli (but not deluxe, x2 3800 and a gig of ram, this is the speed I'm currently encoding at with CCE.
