Do you think rule #6 prompt hypocrisy?

Come on, I understand why we cannot talk about commercial DVD rip, but how about HDTV capture downloaded from the internet?

(I know, I know it is copyrighted but if you post a single screenshot of a copyrighted DVD on the net...You are also technically violating the copyright laws...)

If this forum is really that concerned about copyright...that please dont post any screencap (from copyrighted materials) at all.

1/ I don't think rule6 prompt hypocrisy

2/ I bet this thread will be closed because, as it is formulated, it calls for flaming

3/ I refrained from opening a thread on a rule3 subject less more controversial so rule6...

Hi!I understand why we cannot talk about commercial DVD ripThis is incorrect. If you've PURCHASED a commercial DVD, you certainly CAN discuss anything to do with ripping it. That's precisely what the "Decrypting" sub-forum is for...

What's rule 6?

That was a rhetorical question. I just wanted to point out that lots of people like to point out rules by number only. There should a rule against that practice.

Oh...I mean downloaded DVDrip...

OK, if you use the word "obtain" "have" instead of "downloaded" and you are ok...

I saw some question on this forum that is definitely about processing of downloaded, pirated materials :

"How do I remove GMC and qpel in AVI movie?" (If you have the DVD/DV source, you shouldnt have ask this question, just encode from the original source...)

"How can I know if my AVI file is deinterlaced or progressive" (If you encoded the file youself, you shoud have know it)

"How can I convert an AVI to DVD?"

....

Some question like those I mentioned is definitely about pirated AVI copies...

Why ? Anyone who uses this board is supposed to have read the rules, and thus is supposed to know them.

Some people just use single click software to do their encodes so they wont know, and their mpeg-4 players wont play the file, so they come here to ask. If people can't be civil and intelligent, and more importntly, sesnitive to other people's ignorance of this field, after all it can be pretty damed confusing at first, then they shouldn't even speak up.

"How can I convert an AVI to DVD?"
Some question like those I mentioned is definitely about pirated AVI copies....AVIs can be created by capturing from cameras, among other things."How can I know if my AVI file is deinterlaced or progressive" (If you encoded the file youself, you shoud have know it)Not necessarily. Newbies creating .AVIs are not necessarily aware of the format of the source material...

By the way, if you perform a search of these forums, you'll find several threads (some quite lengthy) regarding Rule #6.

The rule is in place and it doesn't seem that it will be changed - so you are basically "beating a dead horse"...

1. People new to video compression often use gmc and/or qpel, even though they wan't to play the encode on a set top box, because they don't know better. The first succesful encode is often a long and daunting process that people don't wan't to repeat, removing gmc or qpel without redoing the entire process would be very helpful to them.

2. Many people use automated programs that create avisynth scripts for them, they may not know how the script handled their video, or even if their video was interlaced in the firstplace.

3. My capture card and dv camcorder both output video with the avi extension. Turning a capture or a home video into a dvd is definately not copyright infringement.

[edit] Should have read setarips post more carfully, he already answered 2 and 3.

OK if you really believe that is the case that so be it...
But I think only 1% of the encoding population will have to do something like that.

That is the whole point why I use the word "hypocrisy". You even fool youself.

I guess you've chosen to overlook this part of my last post:

You might also want to read the "Announcement" that appears at the top of the "Newbies" page...

No, they know full well, they're just pointing out your logical faults. Setarip in particular is quick to challenge anyone he thinks might be dancing around rule 6. (Not least because re-encoding is usually the easiest fix for encoding problems, so why do the extra effort?)

Doom9 has decided this is the path of least exposure and most usefulness, and does not respond to these threads unless it becomes a strikable flamewar. A cursory glance at the previous threads in this line should tell you this.

What I am trying to say is that rule 6 is doing nothing besides forcing people to rephrase the sentence to comply to it. (That is what I "lies")

As we do not allow download links to be posted here, what is so wrong with just talking about "I download XXX off the net..." (At least they are not lieing)

(Are you using 100% legal software???):D

If this site is about video processing, just put the copyright corcern aside.

If this site is about copyright or does have corcerns about copyright, like I said in my first post, what makes a screen capture legal? (screen capture= 1 frames, video= many frames)

Perhaps you couldn't find the "Announcement" at the top of the "Newbies" page? It leaves absolutely no room for discussion of what "should or shouldn't be":ATTENTION: Read this before posting! Especially on downloaded movies, or movies you do not own!

1. Due to situations that might arise in regard to the mentioning of downloaded files, whether legally or illegally obtained, and the negative attention that this might bring to the forum and the board in general, here is a set of do's and dont's for our members that have any queries or are facing problems regarding downloaded files.

2. No help will be provided in regards to downloaded files. We won't walk the extra mile to clarify the legality of your files. We believe that this is unproductive and the members shouldn't put Doom9’s Forum in this position. Yes, we know that there are plenty of perfectly legal downloadable movies available.....and there are also plenty of illegal, copyrighted ones. To keep us from having to decide which is which, we request that you not mention downloaded movies. Never. Also, don't mention any bootleg DVDs that you got from E-Bay or an Asian DVD/VCD Retailer, or anywhere else.

3. Any thread in which it may be interpreted that the writer has acquired the material in question through illegal channels will be closed immediately after an explanation is issued by a member of the Moderation Team.

4. No member may issue help on illegal files. Any individual post to an existing thread, that subsequently mentions such illegal files or offers help on illegal files, will be edited or deleted in order to maintain the integrity of the original thread.

5. We will and can help to the full extent on any other occasion.

6. In the same spirit, no help will be given on DVD movies that you do not own and are not making a legal backup of.

7. Do not ask for IFO or chapter files that, if you owned the DVD, you could easily get.

8. This board only supports conversion under "Fair Use, we do not support piracy or any insinuation of it.

9. Anyone that does not follow this rule could find themselves given a strike for violating Forum Rule 6, and keep in mind, a Rule 6 strike is worth 2 normal strikes and automatically puts you 2/3 of the way towards suspension.

*Thanks to markrb , most of this mirrors the work in his DVD2SVCD Basic Topics Sticky.

hkl8324, just in case you haven't figured out: That rule is not in place to tell you what you should or should not do at home. It is in place to protect this forum, not to protect you (from legal actions).

Hi all,

When anyone does anything illegal he don't speak in public of it. This isn't hypocrisy, IMHO is common sense. Should not be necessary to state this as a rule. But it no hurts.

I'll close this thread since it's 1) becoming somewhat of a flamewar, 2) has nothing to do with video encoding, 3) the rules are NOT up for debate.
