i am receiving an error when trying to open many of my media files with windows media player 10. the error is:
“windows media player cannot play the file. The player might no support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file”.
I have tried to open up these same files with a different media player and I am unable to open them still. Also, I have tried to download several codec packs and individual codecs, which I have since deleted, but they did not help. I have downloaded gspot and it will tell me that I have a codec for a particular file, yet that file will not play. For the other files that wont play gspot doesn’t even recognize format, and it will be an avi for the most part.
Also when I try to open some files they will play a different file: for example, I will open an audiobook and one of music files will start to play.
Im asking for audio/video help, but in actuality I have pdf’s that give me the same error about not able to recognize extension, possibly due to decompression method.
Any one familiar with any of this?

Hi!

Sounds like you've had a catastrophic scrambling of your hard drive...

You might consider rolling your system back to a recent restore point when it was working properly.

so, what can one do about a "catastrophic scrambling" of one's hard drive?
i wish i had a restore point that worked properly. My restore does not go back far enough, only goes back one month. is there anything else i can do?

Try loading them in to Win Media editor that comes with Win Media Encoder. Some times it can repair the files.

my problem first occured about 5 months ago. After soooo much time has elapsed, the gods only know what kind of problem may have compounded itself numerous times.

Hopefully, you've backed up all of your important-to-you files.

I'd suggest you consider doing a full reinstallation of Windows...
