View Full Version : Xvid - MP3 Audio Gets Out of Sync
Cunhambebe
1st August 2006, 05:00
I couldn't find a solution for this:
I ripped my own DVD with DVD Decrypter and chose a series of VOB clips for reathoring with DVDShrink (there were 9 video clips). I used the backup folder to load all the clips in Vegas (not all at once - one each time), no editing at all, frameserving from there to VDMod for converting to Xvid (I prefer to encode there). The audio file (AC-3) was rendered later to MP3 CBR at 128 kbps in Vegas.
After the end of the process, I loaded both Xvid video and the MP3 file in VDMod for multiplexing both into the AVI container. Result: the audio is gradually out of sync in some sections of the video (sections that actually matches the original clips). It can't be the hardware (processor power / memory) since other files play OK. Changing decoders won't do any good either.
For instance, clips number 1 and 5 ARE the longest ones and the AUDIO gets out of sync after a certain time. The shorter clips play just OK. That's interesting since it's an only one Xvid file but that seems to have preserved a certain relation with the original clips. Or maybe the problem is in the MP3. I don't know.
BTW, I have also tried this: selecting the audio file> Mouse Right Click> Interleaving>Mux>Direct Stream Copy (only for the audio), Full processing mode for the video... but the result was the same.
Maybe the problem is the way to load the VOB files into Vegas (should I have loaded all files at once?)... Maybe I should not use Vegas and do the whole process in VirtualDubMod choosing to open all segments at once.
Maybe I shoud have ripped the files without any splitting..
Don't know if this is the part of the process that is wrong or the multiplexing part in VirtualDubMod.
I hope I won't have to reencode the file to Xvid once again using this time VirtualDub and while encoding the video to Xvid, configuring interleaving options for encoding the audio to MP3. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
Mark :thanks:

Try using another audio format, perhaps either the original AC3 if Vegas can import it or uncompressed .wav format.

Thanks for the tip. Same thing happens if I mux the video with the AC-3 file. I have already tried these steps:
-interleaving,
-changing rate so that the audio matches the video - but no, nothing works. What a mystery!
There must be something with the audio file or somewhere in the middle of all this process; I've just got to find out where it is. It's funny because the smaller clips play OK, just the long ones have the sync problem. After 1 and 1/2 minute, you notice the audio going out od sync. It is interesting to remark that the video is recompressed to Xvid on one big file. On the other hand, when the audio is out of sync and there's a fade out indicating the end of a clip, as soon as the next video begins, the audio gets back to sync again. Who could explain this? Maybe if I author and burn a media with all those clips and rip it again with DVD Decrypter configuring not to split the files... Here's a pic showing my timeline and the parts of the video clips that are out of sync on the multiplexed final file.
Thanks in advance.

Vegas probably just adds padding or truncates the audio where the clips are joined. Why not go into virtualdub and twiddle with the framerate (start with "set video duration to match audio") until you get it in sync?

Thanks for helping.
Vegas probably just adds padding or truncates the audio where the clips are joined.
-That may be true. I was watching the video and noticed that on the parts that the audio is out of sync, at the end of those parts, when there's a fade out, it seems the video waits for the end of the audio to begin playing the next part. It's very weird. I insist: the Xvid file is a whole file and not parts that were simply edited or joined at all. Neither the VOBs, they were edited, yes - in a way that I have put them together on the timeline, but not cut in any part, definitely...
Why not go into virtualdub and twiddle with the framerate (start with "set video duration to match audio")
-I have already tried that...."Change so video and audio durations match".... nothing happened (mode direct stream copy on). :confused:
I do need some more help here - thanks in advance.

@Cunhambebe
Hi!
Have you first played the DVD Shrink-created .VOBs/clips, to make certain that they are each in synch, before you do any conversion?
Cunhambebe

First of all I would like to thank you for your help, since I have already read so many topics showing your tips on how to fix this problem.
Second, I would like to remark that some friends from other sites don't want to learn at all what I did it in Vegas since it seems not to be the right choice to achieve what I want. I promise that Im trying to learn how to use AviSynth and I am sure as soon as I learn it, I won't have these problems anymore :)
I guess I am experiencing this, since all VOBs are not a sequence (it could be this), I mean they are not in the same sequence they were on the original DVD. As I had stated before, I used DVDShrink to open the disc and to reauthor a section, putting all those clips in a row. Maybe this way, the headers are OK for each file, but when in a sequence as the one I have created in Vegas to frameserve from there to VDMod, the longest ones present this sync problem (playing the final Xvid, not the VOBs on the timeline, neither playing each one separately).
Some people told me to load the VOBs in VirtualDubMod, skipping the Vegas part. Well, I can do it, but only for each file at once. Since those clips are not a sequence, they are named this way...
VOB_01_1
VOB_02_1
VOB_03_1
and not the usuall;
VOB_01_1
VOB_01_2
VOB_01_3
That is why VDMod will not open the sequence and that's why I came up with the idea to use Vegas.
One of my friends told me that he would use AviSynth to join all VOBs and BeSweet to encode the MP3 file - but definitely not Vegas, neither other NLEs. (I thought about burning DVD Shrink's backup folder to a re-writable DVD and then ripping it again with DVD Decrypter choosing not to split the files, so as to have an only one VOB; but anyway, some may think this is a stupid idea and in fact it is, because it doesn't work either.. lol).
Have you first played the DVD Shrink-created .VOBs/clips, to make certain that they are each in synch, before you do any conversion?
-Yes, I have. They are 100% perfect. So, that's it. I hope you can help me or at least give some more ideas on how to fix this. Otherwise I'll have to use AviSynth, which anyway, seems to be always the right choice. (I am script impaired).
Thank you very much for your help here.;)

Just a thought. Do the files playback in sync if you just mux the encoded video with AC3 audio?
If so, what are you using to convert to mp3? I use Lame 3.97b2 & have never had an issue. File is larger than allows here so download Lame ACM version & copy .zip contents to preferred location. Right click LameACM.inf & choose install. It iwll then be visible in audio options of VDMod. All the best.

Thanks for taking time to respond, gkar.
Just a thought. Do the files playback in sync if you just mux the encoded video with AC3 audio?
-No! They are perfect for previewing each one separately (power DVD) or for previewing the video+audio on the timeline. As soon as you render the video to AC-3, Wav or MP3, whether for muxing it with the video file or even comparing it to the original audio on the timeline; the result is clearly out of sync. This lack of sync is something noticeble as you can see the it graphically that the audio goes back and forth on certain parts.
Unfortunately I can't load the Xvid file in Vegas for comparing, neither the AC-3 (this kind is only accepted when multiplexed in a VOB).

-I was rendering with Fraunhofer on the Vegas timeline, but I also have LAME here (regular not ACM version), anyway, I don't think it's that MP3 on VDMod list. I'll download the ACM version. Thank you very much for the input. Let's see if it works.

As an experiment, try the following - and then see if the newly created joined .VOB plays synchronously throughout:
Open a DOS box (command prompt) or create a batch file and run the following (substitute the correct .VOB names):
copy /b file(1).vob+file(2).vob+file(n).vob file-total.vob

Open a DOS box (command prompt) or create a batch file and run the following (substitute the correct .VOB names):
copy /b file(1).vob+file(2).vob+file(n).vob file-total.vob
Can u pls tell me how I can do this :confused: ? How can I create a batch file or even deal with the command prompt? I am a newbie. Thanks in advance.
I have already encoded other videos to test if the problem was my hardware or who knows.... They are 100% perfect. I thought about the frameserving but no... this is OK. I am trying to make a forensic analysis to find out where the problem is... and it's certainly there... those VOBs :) If I knew how to deal with DOS... :)
Thanks for your help.

Instead of trying to use DOS for joining the VOBs, I followed this excellent guide:
http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/test.htm
It works great but there's a backward. Save> Wave in VDMod or VDMPEG2 does not work since the *.Wav file is some sort of thing not suppported at all (maybe an ill-formed file). WMP can load and play the file but most audio applications pop up a warning screen reporting an error.
I have also tried to go from VOB to WAV with BeSweet. This is the only one way you get a perfect file, even though after enconding it to MP3 and multiplexing video+audio in VDMod, I have found out the same problem (same, exactly the same sync problem!!! on the same parts of the video).
I'm sure I am almost there... lol
Cunhambebe
3rd August 2006, 18:41
Here are some results (if you are interested)..
-that guide shown above is great but as I've stated before, there are some problems. First, that VOB don't load in some applications such as Sony Vegas, neither in DVDA. I fixed this using TMPGEnc, demultiplexing the video and using BeSweet to go VOB to Wav. Both files were OK but the audio this time was once again out of sync. I fixed it following a guide that uses Sound Forge to resample the file.
This time both files could load in DVDA and since the sync was perfect, I prepared and authored a new VOB that this time was compatible with both Vegas and DVDA - and it must be so with other applications.
Now the Xvid part:
I loaded the VOB in VDMod to render as Xvid. Loaded the same VOB on Vegas timeline to render the AC-3 as WAV. Then I converted WAV to MP3 using LAME.
Now the final and fun part: I muxed both files in VDMod just to find out that... audio was out of sync again... LOL It seems that after all this process, that fix with sound forge was undone someway and the problem got back. Rendering the VOB to Xvid while rendering WAV as MP3 and interleaving it, showed the same final result.
Maybe there's a problem with the video file, I don't know. Is there anyone who can give me a tip on how to fix this? Thanks in advance. All ideas are welcome!

why don't you use dgindex to make a d2v file + ac3
then recode the audio to mp3 ?
example:
VTS_01_1 T01 2_0ch 256Kbps DELAY 0ms
with this file you wont have to correct a thing
VTS_01_1 T01 2_0ch 256Kbps DELAY -484ms
you'll have to set the delay to -484ms in virtualdub(mod) or mkvmerge etc..
i don't know if its of any use hope it helps

Thanks to you both for these suggestions, but I am a newbie. So, I open notepad, then change the extender from ".TXT" to ".BAT"... And? :) lol I'm sorry, you know that all beginnings are difficult, I mean not writting down the ".BAT" of course, but.. the rest - lol lol So, could you pls be more clear? This is the extension... what about the text?
Anyway, the problem must be with the VOB still there in the backup folder, after DVDShrink...

To Cunhambebe (cool name ^^)
goto doom9.org /downloads and download this :
DGMPGDec 1.4.8
open it up and load the vob files saved on your hdd
File/Open then select the vob files
after you've loaded the vobs press f4 or File/save project
this wil give you a d2v file and an ac3/mpa file you need
you can convert the ac3 to mp3 if you want using besweet/belight
you can find these on the download section aswell
btw you don't have to convert the ac3 the .avi container and XviD+AC3 work fine
i'm not sure this is a default setting but check if
audio/output method/demux all tracks is set just incase
and to be on the save side rip the vobs from the dvd once more with dvddecrypter or another ripping tool

Thanks for your help and for your suggestion, but I would like to try this first: DGIndex + VFAPI + Delaycut + VirtualDubMod. Let's see if it works. Inserting AviSynth in the middle of the chain may be a good idea. I've got to have some freetime to learn AviSynth :) - I know it's not difficult at all.

-I know Xvid+AC-3 work fine, but I would like to get a smaller size. All my convertions work great simply multiplexing Xvid + audio (MP3 or AC-3) in VDMod. These VOBs are the only ones who are driving me crazy lol. I'm learning AviSynth... Hope this way I'll never get a single problem with audio sync anymore.
...check if

Thank so much for your help, setarip_old. Let see if I've got it right:
Open a DOS box (command prompt) or create a batch file and run the following (substitute the correct .VOB names): copy /b file(1).vob+file(2).vob+file(n).vob file-total.vob...Use NOTEPAD.EXE (No other program!) to create the file as a ".TXT" file - and then change the extender from ".TXT" to ".BAT"...After you've created the batch file - Using your ACTUAL .VOB names (NOT my example names) - doubleclick on the executable ".BAT" file...
I'll do this as a test, even though I already fixed the problem after 6 days (LOL) trying to figure out how to do it..
It may be a naive solution, a newbie solution... Here's what I did:
First of all, I followed this GUIDE (http://www.bobsomers.com/articles/encoding-dvds-to-high-quality-movie-files-with-xvid-and-ac3-1/), but encoding as 1:1 640x480 (PC PAR); my source was NTSC 29,97 interlaced.
I used the following tools: DGIndex, VFAPI, AC3 Delay Corrector and the excellent software (and free!) called VirtualDubMod.
Although AC3 Delay Corrector didn't show any delay, I decided to "fix" the AC-3 (just to make sure things would work this time) due to the annoying problem of audio sync. Fortunately, after rendering the file as Xvid, the video file presented a very good quality, but unfortunately the audio problem was still there!!! Besides, the AC-3 was an ill formed file (I've got a 5.1 system here: the audio comming from the front speakers was OK but the level from the rear speakers was too low); note: original audio source is Dolby 2.0. The sound from my original DVD comes from all speakes load and clear.
What I did:
I used BeSweet to convert the AC-3 to WAV (then the audio was OK), resampling this WAV file for the first time (from 48 to 44Hz in SForge) and only then I continued to follow this excellent Sound Forge Guide (http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/140540.php) on how to fix the delay, resamplig the file for the second time to match the figures shown in VDMod.
Note: It was somehow difficult to match the figures shown in VirtualDubMod. After resampling I still got a difference of at least 8 secs between the 2 values.
After this process, I used LAME to convert the WAV to MP3 and multiplexed it with the Xvid video file. Result: I noticed that at the end of the video there was still the same annoying sync problem, so I decided to redo everything once more: got that WAV (not the original one - that one that had been already resampled 2 times) and then finally I got an inexpressible difference of 4 secs between the figures shown in both VDMod and Sound Forge.
This time the problem was fixed. I guess resampling the WAV file once again, would have yielded a smaller difference or at least match completely those figures shown in VDMod.
Side Effects:
1)I don't know if I'm seeing things, but in some parts of the video, one could tell that the video is running (just for a couple of seconds) a little bit faster, as though somehow it wanted to match the audio... I don't know... I still remeber my first trials, the audio was following a certain path: sync, out of sync, getting back to sync and so on...
2)Because of this sync cycles, I am still wondering if the big problem is my own hardware (processor, etc) and if it is so, if in fact I am resampling naively to match my own processor power (that will ruin the video if payed on other PCs as well as if I want to render it again as MPEG2 - for testing purposes). I still have to test this. I'll record both files on a CD (the first result and this last one) and test them on my friend's new PC (an Atlhon dual core +4,800). I'll post the results back here as soon as possible. I should have written a thesis on this subject matter smile.
Suggestions are always welcome. Thanks to all of you!

You wanted the audio as 2-ch mp3 - so I suggest you use DGindex to "Decode AC3 track to WAV" and then you convert it to mp3 with whatever you want (althogh I'd use LameXP or besweet/belight)
... and then follow the standart way of encoding
1. avisynth -> file.avs (w/o audio)
2. virtualdub -> file.avi (w/o audio)
3. vdmod -> file.avi + audio.mp3

Thanks for taking time to respond and sorry for the late reply.
I suggest you use DGindex to "Decode AC3 track to WAV" and then you convert it to mp3 with whatever you want (althogh I'd use LameXP or besweet/belight)
-In fact (now) I was using DGIndex to demultiplex the AC-3 and Delaycut to correct the delay if there's really one (sure you can use the figures shown when demultuiplexing the AC-3 with DGIndex, for instance -44, to correct the whole thing in VDMod; in this case you don't need Delaycut :)
Anyway I was noticing that the AC-3 files when demultiplexed with other tools such as TMPGEnc, once multiplexed again with the final AVI, they play loud and clear with WMP. The same thing does not happen at all with these AC-3s demultiplexed with GDIndex (and not "DECODED"). Since I've got a 5.1 system here (PC not regualar home theather), the sound seems to come loud only from the front speakers; the volume is so decreased on the rear speakers. I was just wondering why... On the other hand the sound is perfect when you use Media Player Classic. ?????
.. and then follow the standart way of encoding
1. avisynth -> file.avs (w/o audio)
-I didn't get this one. Could you please explain that a litte bit more to me? Anyway this is how I'm doing now - and it's working:
1)DGINdex - Save Project As...;
2)Delaycut - Fix the delay;
3)VFAPI;
4)VirtualDubMod> VFAPI file> Render the video (2 pass) + interleaving the fixed AC-3 (or)
4B) VirtualDubMod>VFAPI file> Render the video (2 pass)> Multiplex the AC-3.
As you can guess, I'm using VDMod in Full Processing Mode in order to be able to get its filters to do some resizing and cropping. I know that if I used AviSynth somewhere before VDMod, I could crop and resize there, letting me use MDMod in Fast Recompress Mode (I guess that'd be a lot better - maybe :)
If there's anything wrong here, pls let me know, will ya? :D Thanks in advance and thanks for your help!

From reading your most recent posts to this thread, I still can't determine if you actually tried and succeeded in joing the .VOBs - and, if you did, whether the audio remained in synch throughout the new joined .VOB.

You'll need avisynth installed. Here is a script example for anamorphic 720x576 video: starwars_ep.6.avs
LoadPlugin("D:\Programs\dgmpgdec146\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("sw6.d2v", cpu=0)
#crop(8,80,-8,-80)
The .avs file is loaded in vdub. And now you can use the fast recompress mode in virtualdub(mod). You won't need VFAPI any more, when using avisynth.
Cropping values for the script can be determined with vdub in "full processing mode" + "null transform" filter. When you got the crop numbers, enter them in the .avs, remove the #, save, and load new .avs script in vdub to render the video only. In fast recompress.
The audio settings should be "direct stream copy" + "source audio" for the 1st-pass and the 2nd-pass compress. You'll get an .avi file with the video only ready to be muxed with the audio in vdubmod finally.
As I can see you render the video twice. Why? It should be done only once. No matter in 1-pass / 2-pass mode.
When adding the audio with vdmod, use video -> "direct stream copy". And if the audio is already in ac3, as well "direct stream copy". Sometimes I've had problems with mp3 sync, then I add the wave, save video+wav, open the new file, and encode the wave in mp3 (the video is again in direct stream copy mode).
p.s.: If your movie is on 2xDVD sources, let me know in case of audio sync problems for the 2nd DVD

Thanks for responding, Plamen234;
As I can see you render the video twice. Why? It should be done only once. No matter in 1-pass / 2-pass mode.
-No, I'm not rendering the video twice... Those are 2 passes, nothing more than that. Maybe I haven't explained that well, let's see it:
4)VirtualDubMod> VFAPI file> Render the video (2 pass) + interleaving the fixed AC-3 (or)
4B) VirtualDubMod>VFAPI file> Render the video (2 pass)> Multiplex the AC-3.
-I load the VFAPI file in VirtualDubMod, configuring the encoder for 2 passes and multiplexing the audio (what is done in the second pass), OR:
-same thing, but multiplexing the audio only after the end of the process, going to Streams, ADD, Multiplex, interleaving. That's it. So, as you can see, I'm not rendering the video 2 times (except that VFAPI is serving - but I don't think this can be considered a render, can it? :)
When adding the audio with vdmod, use video -> "direct stream copy".
-I do it! Thank you.
And if the audio is already in ac3, as well "direct stream copy".
-I know that. Thanks.
Sometimes I've had problems with mp3 sync, then I add the wave, save video+wav, open the new file, and encode the wave in mp3 (the video is again in direct stream copy mode).
-I see, you open the file in VDMod and render the audio with LAME ACM.... is that what you mean? Thanks in advance.
Anyway, there's something weird I've noticed with my process (DGIndex + the rest....). The audio file (AC-3) which is demultiplexed by DGIndex, when played in Windows Media Player (after the process is finished and the audio multiplexed once again in the file), seems to come only from the front speakers (I've got a 5.1 system on the PC). The sound is too decreased on the rear speakers. On the other hand when I load the file in Media Player Classic, everything seems to work and the sound is played correctly. I was just wondering why this is happening. Maybe something is wrong with DGIndex (please note that I'm not decoding the file - this way it doesn't come along with the LFE - I am only demultiplexing it).
If I demultiplex the audio with TMPGEnc, it doesn't happen the same thing. Audio is played correctly in WMP and MPC. ???
Well, I'd like to thank you for the detailed explanations on using AviSynth. In fact I've alredy installed it, but I can't find out a way to make it work. Once I remember seeing a message on Windows Media Player - maybe a hint that the application was running. I know it works through the.. notepad :) but it seems I'm doing something wrong around here.
So here's another question (some will wonder if this topic is for real - LOL LOL)...
[b]When I install AviSynth, the installer asks to associate the AVS files with Notepad (open) and with Media Player 6.4 (play). Do I need to check those boxes or should leave them unchecked? I guess this should be a good way to start :) the very beginning.
-Thanks in advance :o

avisynth files (*.avs) can be created & edited with notepad (for example). They are ordinary *.txt files written (renamed) as *.avs
Use the example above to create one (with your paths and .d2v). The .avs can be opened with media player classic - so you can see if the script is ok (or the error message). The audio can also be added in another .avs for screening purpose. If you need that, ask.
-I see, you open the file in VDMod and render the audio with LAME ACM.... is that what you mean? Thanks in advance.
Yes, but I do it very rarely. I have both the ac3 track and the mp3 ready to mux in advance. My target size are to fit a dvd-r so I add 2nd mp3 audio track (it's only 200MB)
Media player classic has its own ac3 filter. But I'm used to the AC3filter http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
I've never used TMPGEnc.

-No problem!
Media player classic has its own ac3 filter. But I'm used to the AC3filter http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
-I've already got this one... for a long time :) Anyway, thanks for the input on Media Player Classic's AC-3 filter.
Just one thing: What about installing AviSynth? Should I check thos options or leave them unchecked? Should I post a thread on this??? People wil certainly laugh at me lol :)
Thank you very much.

checking them would ease your work - you'll be able to create/edit/play .avs with or without putting the check marks

I see... thank you very much for the input. :)
I'll reply as soon as possible, as soon as I install AviSynth and complete setarip_old's test.
Thanks to all.

Just a note here: I dit not forget setarip_old's suggestion. Since I am a newbie I'm learning AviSynth. I'd like to tell you, setarip_old, that.. yes, I am going to try your suggestion.
I'll post the results as soon as possible.
Cheers,

I used the backup folder to load all the clips in Vegas, no editing at all, frameserving from there to VDMod for converting to Xvid
?
if the sound works in vegas, a long slow way around is to save the project as an mpeg in vegas and then convert the mpeg into xvid.
or am i missing somthing?

I'm so sorry for the late reply. I was trying to do it the wrong way in Vegas.
Anyway, Vegas 6.0 can load VOB files (audio AC-3 + video). I was editing (joining) the clips (VOBs) in the timeline. No convertion to MPEG2 at all since VOB files are video containers (please correct me if I'm wrong). Of course you could frameserve this as YUY2, loading this file in AviSynth and then frameserving again to VDMod. But why? Vegas works in RGB mode, that means, color conversions (YV12 to RGB then to YV12 again). Now, thanks to our friends around here, I understood the correct way to do this: DGIndex> Delaycut (optional, to correct the audio DELAY if there's really one)> AviSynth> VDMod.
Anyway, there's a thread around here showing how to frameserve from Vegas to AviSynth. If you have original material in the timeline (pictures, videos...), you can frameserve it from Vegas to AviSynth through Debugmode's FrameServer (chosing to frameserve as YUY2 includding the audio - otherwise you'll get an error warning). Write a simple script as though you had an AVI file, load it on AviSynth and use VDMod in Fast Recompress. Interesting: I notice Xvid files encoded this way are a lot clearer than the ones using MPEG2 files as the source through the DGIndex process.
