DVD Decryptor: PUOs and RCE ... (please help)

Hi,

I back up all of my DVDs to full-copy .iso files and watch them with my xbox running xbox media center.

I am happily using DVD Decryptor (3.5.4.0) to do this. It works great. However, there are a few nagging questions I have about it:

- I very deliberately am telling it to remove all PUOs and structure protections, however, most of my disks when I play the .iso file, I still have to wait for the FBI warning screen, or I have to sit and wait for the studio animation at the beginning to play before it gets to the DVD menu.

Why is this ? Is it perhaps a problem with xbox media center, or are there really PUOs that dvd decryptor cannot remove ? Or is the FBI warning, etc., not a PUO at all and nothing can get rid of it ?

Is there another application, or perhaps one that could exist in the future, that I could run all my .iso files through and remove these last bits of prohibited actions ? That way I would not have to rip them all again...


- About half of my DVDs come up in dvd decryptor as "RCE Protection: YES" - do I care ? I have spot-checked these .iso files and I can go from chapter to chapter and FF/RW and watch them just fine - I haven't seen any problems with them. There was only 1-2 discs that dvd decryptor said it actually had to insert dummy frames, and only 1 disc that dvd decryptor totally gave up on a sector, and I had to choose "ignore" to get it to finish - what will these look like ?

I am hoping that the majority that said "RCE: yes" will all play just fine...

You could rip the DVD in file mode using DVD Decrypter, blank the unwanted material using VobBlanker, and then create the new ISO using ImgTool Classic. There are probably easier ways but this is my tried and true method.

Ok. So are those things (FBI warning, etc.) _not_ PUOs, and that is why they aren't removed ?

What are they then ?

I have to say there is no way I am going to lengthen this process any more by ripping to X, and fiddling and converting to Y - I'll just sit through the FBI warning...I was just curious as to what was going on and why DVDD was not catching those...

Hi!

When you've removed the PUOs (Prohibited User Operations) you haven't removed the actual video, just the restrictions regarding that video - that typically prevent you from either fast forwarding or selecting "Next" while the warning is onscreen.

You can readily see the difference by playing both your original and purchased DVDs - and clicking "Next" or Fast Forward when the FBI warning appears...

Yes, I'm sorry I misspoke - I do understand that that video is still there.

And yes, it seems I can FF through the FBI warning, but I don't seem to be able to jump straight from the FBI warnring to the main menu - it seems that I still have to play the entire warning (even at FF speed) to get to the main menu.

Is this expected ?

I'd guess the specific DVD has incorporated the FBI warning as part of the menu VOB - hence, with PUOs turned off, you can now FF but not select "Next" to get to the menu (The same concept as being able to FF within a chapter, but not being able to press "Next" to get further on in that same chapter)...

So what about the discs that say RCE protection ? What is the end result of an .iso that has a few dummy frames inserted ?

What about an RCE disk that has no other errors ?

You can set DVD Decrypter to remove RCE protection as follows:

Tools>>Settings>>File Mode Put a checkmark next to "Remove RCE protection"...

You may be able to press Next Chapter on your remote to FF through the warnings.

ISO mode is a 1:1 copy. You get what you ask for. File mode provides much greater flexibility to remove offending material as rack04 has stated.

That said, PUOs exist on 3 levels in a DVD - the PGC, the VOB and in the title play map. In order to be fully free, they need to be removed from all. However, removing PUOs from VOBs can have consequences if you have a DVD with angles (the little angle icon sometimes comes on screen and stays there).

By far and away, the most flexible tool for removing PUOs is PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) - it has a special PUO plugin. But you need to rip in file mode for it to work. It can quickly make an ISO after your edits, if you want/need that.

EDIT: This tool also has a very nifty function to enable you to jump directly to any PGC (eg the main menu). See here (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/How_to_use_PgcEdit_new_macro.htm) for a guide on how to use it (guide written by a total idiot!!).

Right - that's what I do, of course.

What I am wondering is, if that is checked (remove RCE) then do I care at all if a disc is RSE: YES ? Or does it not matter ?

What about the 2-3 discs that had a few dummy frames inserted - will those be unbearable to watch, or will I not notice ?

And then finally, one disc just couldn't read a sector at all - so I assume since I chose to "ignore" and continue ripping that I will indeed notice something on that disc....

There are more options:

Rip the disk in File mode, run it through DVD Shrink and in reauthor mode, select "Movie only."

Rip in .IFO mode and select only the main movie.

Obviously, these two methods will discard all extras.

Or use RipIt4Me in conjunction with DVD Decrypter v.3.54, DVD Shrink, and if needed, FixVTS. So far I've been very happy with the results ( the guide helps a lot).

Just realized that I've reached my "Silver" anniversary with my 25 th post. Thanks to everyone at Doom9 it has been a pleasure this past year reading (lurking) and learning. Like osmosis some of this stuff is beginning to sink in and perhaps soon I'll be able to make some good "insightful" posts.
