Jerky motion on TV after MPEG2 capture

I captured vhs video via Hauppauge WinPVR 250 to mpeg-2. After cutting out some segments I then re-encoded using CCE 2.70.2. On PC all is well, but on TV there is slight jerkiness of the image especially when moving. I checked in bitrate viewer and both the capture and CCE outputs are top field first. I encoded in CCE using top field first checked and offset of 0. I even played around with all combinations of unchecking top field first, setting offset to 1. All variations produce exactly the same appearance which leads me to think the field order is not the problem. I used QuEnc and got the same result so not apparently CCE's fault.

Can anyone help with this?

It's probably the MPEG2 decoder that the viewer program you are using chooses to use.

Thank you but you see the jerkiness is only present when viewed on the television after the DVD has been made and played on a DVD player. An update though, encoding with TMPGEnc has eliminated the problem so it does seem to be the encoder after all. And, actually, it is quite bizarre because both TMPGEnc and Canopus Procoder report the video as BFF whereas Bitrate Viewer and checking in VirtualDub (using separate fields) shows it to be clearly TFF, as expected.

Well, I thought TMPGEnc had eliminated it but that was because I had encoded the d2v file made from the captured mpg file. When I encoded the avs file (see below) the jerkiness was there again.

Moving to CCE forum; if it turns out to be an authoring issue, then that's the wrong place, too..

Letricheur - Your problem is that the Teco Bit Rate Viewer reports the OPPOSITE field order for Hauppauge captures from what it actually is. I have the same problem with my PVR-350 captures. I don't remember as I don't do this type of encode real often, but whatever the Bit Rate Viewer says is the field order of your original capture, it is dead wrong. Use the opposite when encoding with CCE and you will eliminate the motion problem.

AFAIK the Hauppauge cards output top field first MPEG2 so treat and encode it as such.

By the way, you should rather use Letterbox instead of cropping and resizing since you're dealing with interlaced material.

Have you ever thought of using Web Scheduler for capture, ProjectX for editting/demuxing? You can capture the transport stream direct an eliminate any software modifications. Oh and why are you re-encoding?(you shouldn't need to).

Thank you everyone for your replies. I finally decided to omit the cropbottom and resizing part. I was removing the stripe of vhs noise at the bottom of the frame because I could see it on my computer. I didn't realize you don't see this on the television. Doing this and leaving TFF in CCE and offest to zero, everything worked out OK. I am re-encoding because I wanted to capture at the highest possible bit rate, which then required re-encoding to fit on the DVD-5. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tip about Project X. I love it. It is very fast, much faster than Womble's MPEG-VCR, and it demuxes at the same time as cutting. I cannot find DVD Scheduler, though. Do you have a link?

Web Scheduler is a DVB capture app. Its not going to work with a Hauppauge MPEG/2 encoder card. There are 3rd party schedule apps for the Hauppauge PVR cards and command line capture apps that you can run via the Windows scheduler.

Looking at the software Hauppage gives for a PVR( WinTV 2000) is the same for the WinTV Nova(which works with web Scheduler). As long as the drivers are BDA compatable I see no reason it shouldn't work. All you can do is try.

That's because the Hauppauge software has specific support for both types of devices. WS is a DVB only tool and only supports DVB sources. It won't even be aware of the Hauppauge's presence.
