View Full Version : Override Aspect Ratio?

I'm wondering how that option (in "Hidden Options") works.

For instance, if the input is a DVD with 16:9 aspect ratio, what happens if you choose that override option and set 4:3 instead? How would AutoGK change the aspect ratio of the movie?

Would it--

1) Crop the sides, to create the correct AR?

or

2) Just resize it, distorting the picture by compressing it in from the sides?

or

3) Letterbox it?

or ..........??

Just curious how that works. Thanks in advance for the explanation.

Hello.

As you can read in the tutorial, this is an option to change manually the aspect ratio detection produced by AutoGK's indexing tool DGIndex. I think you should use it only when the log file reports an error determining the correct aspect ratio of the source. Considering your example, if the source is 16:9 and DGIndex finds 4:3 then you have to set 16:9 manually if you want a correct video encoding. I don't think this option can be used to force an aspect ratio different from the right one.

Right, aspect ratio has nothing at all to do with borders or cropping because they're each independent processes. If you want a letterbox 4:3 video from a widescreen source, you'd have to add borders yourself to keep from stretching the image vertically.
I don't think this option can be used to force an aspect ratio different from the right one.
It can, but AutoGK usually finds the right one. The ability is there for the reasons you stated, to force the correct aspect if DGIndex reports it incorrectly, but you can certainly force the wrong one.

How would you do this? I have videos from friends in AVI and Mpg with very bad AR. I need to convert these to xvid which would play on my DVD player but ofcourse it plays with squished sideways or vertically. I need to know if this manual change can be done visually, or if such a feature can be added. I am new but this is just a question.

Two more features it needs is to save the batch jobs
and support more formats to encode from -- to avi
thanks
