Hight(480) too high after encode DVD(NTSC,720x540) to 'original format' ?

Hi.

I encoded a NTSC DVD to Xvid using the software SimpleDivX.

When i play the original DVD with ZoomPlayer it shows the source width/hight at respectively 720x540.

the output setting "original size" in SimpleDivX resulted in a video with the resolution 720x480.

But the video is too high, which can be seen by the persons on the video being higher than on the original DVD.

What's wrong about my encoding?

PAR should be set to 8:9. That way it should resize during playback like the DVD. Otherwise you would need to resize to a 1:1 resolution such as 640x480.

I want to play the videos on my portable PMP "archos av500" thats why i want to have them converted to the proper values.

As i said, i use SimplDIVX with the following intereface:

On the 2. tab "video" i can put desired values into "cropping" and "resizing".
When i put 640 for "AUTO cropping and resizin" SimpleDivx fills the other values as at the pic on the link above. But the video is 640x352 after compression and not 640x480.

Is 640x352 the right size for this video?
What shall i put on this tab exactly to get a video of 640x480 not being too high?

If all fails, just play the DVD with a normal DVD player and measure the dimensions manually on your desktop. After that cut the black borders and set some resolution with the same aspect ratio manually.
