View Full Version : No subtitles in some movies

Hello,
i very often use AutoGK zu backup my movies.
Recently i converted Star Trek 5 (Final Frontier) and chose the subtitle, that shows the translation for the klingon dialogues (i want it burnt-in).
After encoding i saw, that the Avi-File had no subtitle.
I began tests and i get the same result in "Last Samurai" (subtitle for japanese) and Star Trek the Motion Picture (klingon).
If i choose the subtitle for the full movie, noone is seen in the avi/preview, too.
Then i tested an episode of "The 4400" and there is no problem.
Every subtitle i tested is correctly burnt-in in the avi and also in the preview.
So, in some movies subtitles work, in others they do not.
Are there any problem with some movies, AutoGK cannot handle or is it because of me?
Thanks, Andi

if you could don't post link here though as forums don't like it (Against the rules), could you PM me the link, be much appreciated.
Is it in fact against the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) to even ask for such a thing in the first place.

Hi,
Dig again in FAQ 3/Subtitles: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72679
and in the manual between step 2 and step3: http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN
It's tricky but with trial/errors on different possibilities you should get it. Or make a search on AGK/Subtitles...

fairuse wizard give try, does it for you, i've endoded startrek 1 & 2 and worked like a treat, fairuse seems to scan the IFO better,
tried with AutoGK, but again, could not justify the time, ecspecially when i had 28 sub stream to search from, to much, and would take to long,
live long and prosper,

@Pulp Catalyst:
FUW has a 700MB-limit in the free version. and i don't want to pay for the full version. there is so much freeware on the web, that's not worth it.
@BigDid:
i tried every possibility with "Last Samurai", and nothing worked. Nothing!
There are 2 subtitles which are interesting: The main german-subtitle, that shows all dialogues through the whole movie AND it also contains the translations for the japanese.
The other subtitle contains _only_ the translations for japanese.
According to the AGK-Tutorial i chose the sub with all the dialogues, then activated "forced subs" and watched the preview: no subtitle, when japanese is spoken.
Then i chose the sub with the transl. for jap. only and watched the preview: same result, no subtitle.
What else would you do?

What do you mean?
Maybe another way is to rip the subtitles and include them in AGK via the Ctrl+F8 Feature...
Es there a (easy-to-use) programm, which has a good tutorial?
Thanks, Andi

I don't believe the subs will show up in the preview.
I don't know about a "good tutorial," but VobSub isn't too difficult to use. There is a sub-forum (or Sub sub-forum) dedicated to the subject.

Hi-
You have only 2 choices. One is that the foreign dialog is mixed into a very large subtitle file with all the other dialog. In such cases you choose that sub stream and activate Forced Subs.
The other choice is when they have their own sub stream, usually a very small one. In such cases you choose that one and you DO NOT select Forced Subs.

Hi,
I mean make a search on the whole forum with the words AGK (or Autogk)+subtitles or restrict the search to the AGK section and search subtitles; results will look like that:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113327&highlight=subtitles
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=111398&highlight=subtitles
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110978&highlight=subtitles
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110523&highlight=subtitles
These links are not answers to your query, they are exemple of a search result.
I'm not a subtitles specialist, better follow manono recommandation and/or continue searching :)

@manono:
Hi,
that's exactly what i did, but nothing worked.
@CWR03:
According to the agk-tutorial the sub _should_ be shown in the preview.
Other movie's like "The 4400" e.g. do show any chosen subtitle in the preview (i tested).

OK then. Sorry if it's not working for you. Here's a surefire way to find them. It'll take some time and work on your part, but it'll find them if they're there. Get the subs yourself, all of them. AutoGK just gets one stream at a time. Open VobSub Configure. It comes with the VobSub package, or if you have GKnot installed, you'll find it in the Subtitles Tab. Select the IFO for the VTS that contains your movie (Open->Dropdown box->IFO), give it a destination and click OK. When done, click OK twice and you'll have all the subs for that movie in one IDX/SUB set of files. Then open it in Sub Resynch (included in VobSub or found in the Subtitle Tab of GKnot). 4 lines down on the left is the dropdown box listing all the different sub streams. Click on them one at a time and check out the different sub streams. Don't be put off if some say a different language from what you want. Sometimes they're mislabeled. Check them all. If they're Forced Subs, they'll be marked as such when you open the correct stream (over on the right is a column where the Forced Sub lines are noted). You can click on each line to see what the dialog is. If there are a lot of sub streams, be careful which you pick, as the numbering is different between the 2 programs. The first one in AutoGK is marked as 00 in Resynch. If they're Forced, they'll be marked as such in one or more of the streams. If they're not Forced, they'll have their own stream, and that stream will be small.
Sometimes when there are a lot of sub streams, and especially when there are Forced Subs involved, or some dialog in a foreign or alien language, this is actually the fastest way to find them, since AutoGK has to go through the entire process for each sub stream. If you're keeping them external, you can use VobSubStrip to get rid of any and all of the streams you don't want, and just skip AutoGK for getting the subs. If you're burning them into the video, you'll still have to use AutoGK.

i had the same problems, the problem lies in not just finding the right stream, but also finding the right time index, as the IFO will tell your DVD player when to activate the Sub stream for that paticular time frame, (klingons and vulcans speaking in this case), but AutoGK wasn't designed for this, AGK assumes that you either have the sub on or off, it doesn't take it's cue from the IFO,
maybe this is one of the reasons why Fairuse Wizard charges, as this must of took a while to program (IFO analysis) and is completely automatic, but as for finding a free solution, like manono mentions, it won't be easy.

manono,
that was excellent.
I did everything you wrote and startet the preview with the produced idx/sub files. and it worked. the subtitle was shown in the movie.
Thank you a lot.
