can somone explain for me reason of this widely used expression : "the best codec is it that works best for you" plus one example

When someone asks "What's the best codec to use," the answer can only be subjective. In this example, "what's best" will be different for everyone for different reasons. Any answer would be highly debatable and arguments are bound to start over the differing responses.

...For example, xvid can be played on many standalone DVD players, h264 offers superior image quality potential, MPEG-2 is the required video standard for DVDs, WMV can be played on the vast majority of computers without any configuration.
Every codec has pros & cons - it's up to you to choose what suits you best :)
