What software do I need to edit media center files, to edit out comercials and early starts or over runs?

one option that i know of (although it is not freeware) is VideoReDo (http://www.hyperreality.com.au/hyper.php?section=products&category=video_editing)
there is a trial version avaliable for you to try before you invest any funds.

If you mean .dvr-ms files, then dvrmstoolbox comes to mind. Also, dvr(ms)+word usually gives a useful program, like DVR2MPG DVR-MPEGCUT "dvr-ms sample code.msi" just to get you started....
