I captured this video with Virtual VCR 640X480 Huffyuv at 29.97 and I keep getting this annoying line that looks like some sort of static. I am recording from a Scientific Atlanta Digital cable box wiith and S-video cable, This also seems to happen when i use the A/V cables also, does anyone know what causes this and wha ti could do to get rid of it? http://members.cox.net/dman1843/line1.JPG

That is closed captioning data in line 21. It doesn't show on a normal TV. You have to crop it off.

Well, it's the overscan data, which is only visible on tft/lcd devices.

640x480? You're better off capturing at the actual resolution of NTSC, that being 720x480.

If I'm not mistaken, there's no problem with 640x480 as long as the aspect ratio is specified when authoring..?
I would like to comment about the captured pic: the bottom line(baby suri) is dot crawl issue?

I too used the near identical, i.e., Svideo and Scientific Atlanta and 29.97fps(ntsc). The cap card's a Kworld software type Philip's SA713x chip.
Virtual VCR does not seem to allow filtering and for that matter does anyone use filter when using virtualdub to capture? I'm thinking not due to frame dropping issue.
Feedback greatly appreciated.

No, interlacing issue. Read below.

No, improper resizing for the screenshot. If you'll notice, it's 831x593 here, and so interlacing is distorted. This is why the mice teeth look uneven.

Well, I always cap without applying filters, but that's partially because I use a DV converter for analog capture. However, even if I were using a capture solution that would allow filtering during capture, I wouldn't do it. My preferred solution is to cap and then do my processing with Avisynth. It's more flexible, and if a filter gives you an undesired effects later in the video, you don't have to re-cap to undo it.

I'm capturing from a Scientific Atlanta also (8300HD) and haven't seen this line. Am using the "Cap to AVI" from within VirtualDub with Huffyuv encoding through s-video to an ATI 1800XT.
The output from the 8300HD over s-video is 640x480 (both when "live" and during "Copy to VCR" unless I'm totally loopy). FYI - letterboxing when watching HD programs puts horizontal bars above and below that are not exact (58 lines above, 62 below: 480 - 58 - 62 = 360) but you do get 640x360 (16:9).
I would suggest turing off the CC, capping to a standard size, and resizing the video during post-processing (as per LocalH). The only thing I do for video processing during capture is Huffyuv and cropping to reduce file size. De-interlacing / reverse telecide is left to post-processing. Takes more hard disk but is worth the hassle.

Well, there is no horizontal resolution per se, since it's an analog output, but as I have an 8000 (SD version), I do know that it digitizes analog channels at 640x480, while the digital channels are just written to the drive raw (SD channels usually have similar resolutions to those found on DVB, so something like 352/480/640x480). However, it probably doesn't make that much of a difference - my DV converter of course caps at 720x480, and I've recorded quite a bit of material through my cable box (both live and from the hard drive - my box only has composite for the "Copy to VCR" output so I use the main S-Video output), and I've not noticed any problems. I generally encode this material to DVD, so it works in my favor as I don't have to resize.
