Guys, I have a kenwood 5900m 400 disc dvd changer. It plays single layer burns just fine. However when I burn a double layer and even set the book type to DVD-ROM it will not start up the dvd. That is with a LITEON and memorex and verbatim DVD+R dl discs.

When my friend burned the memorex with his pioneer drive I am able to get the DVD dual layer to actually load up sometimes. This leads me to believe burn quality can be effected by the type of DVD burner you use.

If I find the right DVD burner and the right media could I actually get dvd dual layer burns to reliabily read like regular dvd and single layer dvd-r's do on my 5 year old Kenwood DV-5900M?

What DVD burner(s) provide the best double layer burn compatiblity with old dvd players?
Does the media matter?

My current burner is

liteon 812s upgraded to a 832s with cross flashed firmware.
tried memorex media and verbatim media and none worked all booktypes set to DVD-ROM

friends burner
pioneer model
tried memorex media and worked sometimes and sometimes not. booktype DVD-ROM.

Hi!

I'd speculate that your "ancient" Kenwood is just not up to reading burned media...

yeah I am starting to think the same thing. The frustrating thing is single layer burns work fine and dual layer burns work sometimes but only when using the pioneer drive. This leads me to believe that if I found a DVD writer that was really good at burning solid burns with a good media combination I might get the ancient Kenwood to work reliably with double layer burns.

New, decent standalone players are rather inexpensive - and can playback virtually anything. Make your life simple and buy one ;>}

the problem is I don't just need a decent stand alone player, I need a large changer with SDI output. That gets expensive and hard to find. I'd rather keep the kenwood and find the right combination of DVD writer and media.

You might consider using something like DVD Shrink and instead of backing up the entire movie, only copy the main movie files to a DVD-5. Before dual-layer had become affordable I would on occasion copy movie only to one disk and everything else to another when there were extras I cared to see.
