View Full Version : Subtitle problem in half D1

The easiest way I can describe my problem is refer you to the files here (http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/rebuilder/subtitles.rar).

Essentially, the subbies look very poor in half D1. I guess this is because nothing is done to make them half D1, too.

Anybody seen this before? And have a remedy?

Very grateful for any hints.

It looks like you're losing horizontal pixels in the subs. You might try using an extra wide font, such as Arial Bold, instead of the standard Arial font...

Thanks for the reply.

The subbies are the original ones muxed back in during the rebuild. I think I have to remake them in 352 x 576.

blu maybe it's only a wrong resolution setting?
Open the corresponding ifo in IfoEdit, double-click on "Video" under "Title Set (Movie) attributes" change it to Half D1 and try again.

Unfortunately not, rippraff - video comes out of DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) at 352 x 576

Did you watch the result on a sap?
When it comes to sub problems I don't trust my software players as it happens now and then in the past that everything was okay on my sap when it wasn't on PowerDVD etc.

Not, yet. I might try that.

I'll get back to you. Thanks.

PC DVD players render subtitles in a different way that stand-alone players do. In the first ones, background and subpictures are overlapped and then the final image is rendered with correct AR. However, in the second ones, background is "resized" (for example letterboxed in tv 4:3) and then overlapped with (corresponding) subpicture. For example, in a 16:9 menu with conversion to 4:3 letterboxed, there are two subpictures, however, in a 4:3 PC screen is used the widescreen subpicture.

Now, imagine overlapping a 352x576 image with a 720x576
(maybe keeping only 352 horizontal resolution lines out of 720).
That's the way I see this.

Yes! I confirm the way Rebuilder handles subtitles is correct... What you (Blutach) are observing is just an effect of the playback on PC. On standalone players everything is ok... Double checked...

Also - subpictures should never be resized. In all conditions, but especially when the movie is in half D1, they are overlayed AFTER the resizing of the mpeg video stream to full resolution... Half resolution subpictures simply do not exist in the DVD specs...

And happily I can confirm this, too after playing on my SAP. Thanks to all who helped for their insight.
