Divx setting for football match?

Hi, What I am trying to do is encoding football matches into divx. I want to find out what setting is appropriate.

I will capture a football match using Hauppauge PVR-500 at 12mb. The mpeg2 file will be approximately 9 GB and 90 min long. I will make divx(1.4GB) from the mpeg2 file.

I have latest divx pro codec which is 6.2.5. I have researched about divx setting and here is my ideal setting..


Certification Profile - Unconstrained (for adaptive multiple consecutive)
Encoding Presets - 3 (default but, I don't know what it is for)
Rate Control Mode - Multipass, 1st pass
Bitrate Calculator - Duration:90min, File Size:1.4GB, Audio bitrate:128 and Video bitrate:2037kbps (Should I use frames and fps for exact video bitrate?)
Encoding Mode - Balanced
Bidirectional Coding - Adaptive Multiple Consecutive
Max Keyframe interval - 300 frames
Keyframe threshold - 50% (I don't know what it is for)
No Q-Pel and GMC because I will go for high bitrate
The resolution will be 640X480
Quantization - MPEG-2
Psychovisual - Off
Interlace - ? (I will capture football match from satellite TV but, I don't know the source is interlaced or not.)


I think a football match will require high bitrate because the picture is constantly moving fast. I think 1500kbps will give satisfying result.

Any advice will be appreciated :)

Well, the source is going to be interlaced for sure.
The thing is, if you encode interlaced, you most probably don't want to watch the file on PC but on TV using a standalone DivX player, in which case you'll have to force Home Theater Profile.
The bitrate (which has nothing to do with the framerate btw, only the length counts) you got there is pretty good, so the video quality should be OK.
Btw, the quantization you've got there may be a little bit off, considering that you've got a high motion video, I would stick to H263 in your place.

I watch divx on PC mostly so, I will stick to unconstrained profile for adaptive multiple consecutive. BTW Is my divx setting fine? and Do you know what Encoding Presets and Keyframe threshold are for?

Is H263 Optimized appropriate for high motion video? Should I use use Psychovisual as well?

H263 Optimization isn't related to high or low motion. Most would turn it on ( it improves the PSNR ), I'm a bit more dubious about the actual visual efficiency ( though I wouldn't say it'll hurt ).

Psychovisual is often a matter of taste, but it has more chances to pleases you than not ( hence, you gotta try )

Well, I wouldn't say H263 has nothing to do with low and high motion. I personally wouldn't use MPEG2 quantization unless I'm using a very high bitrate, since it produces sharper video which needs a surplus of bitrate. For 640x480 high motion video, 2000kbps may be sufficient for good quality, but not extraordinarly high, it's still around 0.2 bits/pixel only.

Going back to the interlacing issue, if you're going to watch it on PC then deinterlacing would be a must here. Look at the AviSynth forum for appropriate methods. I personally would have used TomsMoComp without thinking too much, but you may find better methods there so...

Don't care about keyframe thresholds, the default is good.
As for the encoding presets, the higher the slower your encoding session will be. Some report slightly better results with 5 or 6. Anything beyond that is a waste of time. The time you invest with 7 or higher is similiar to H264 encoding times and H264 is better than DivX so...

I was talking about 'Optimization vs no Optimizations' more than 'h263 vs mpeg'. 'Optimization' in the case means trellis, and it's unrelated to motion. As to 'h263 vs mpeg', well, it's mostly a matter of taste. I tend to prefer h263 or a custom matrix ( but definitively not the default matrix ).
