Difference between DivX and MS-mp4

my Plextor TV402U encodes in DivX (5) and MS-mpeg-4. What is the difference between the two formats?

WMV you meant i guess.

ms mpeg-4 is basically divx 3.11, an older codec from ms.

supported is MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, ASF, DivX, WMV

Thanks for your replies. Weirdly enough, the recordings done in the MS format look much better than the DivX ones at the same bitrate ... But I guess that's a hardware matter ...

Well it's not impossible for high bitrate encoding (aka low quantizer).

I can change various settings, some of which I haven't heard the names of before :) . I'm still waiting for a full documentation. Plextor must have been overwhelmed by the abilities of their programmers. :D

Indeed, I'm recording at an average of 6000 MBit/s. Unfortunately, Plextools Pro XL does not offer a DivX preview of what I'm doing because of licence problems.

The clips recorded in MS-mpeg seem to look a bit smoother, just the right thing for an analogue recording. DivX looks sharpest, mpeg-2 gets out of synch too often (not while a recording is being done but right from the start. Perhaps a usb issue ... Perhaps a driver matter ... I don't know).
