View Full Version : How to burn files over 2GB on DVD?
Well, I guess I should :search:, maybe there i a solution allready threaded. I searched, but didn't find it... :scared:
I'm using Nero 6.6.0.16., I know i have to change the file mode from ISO to something different, but nero doesn't offer that for me! why? And I know there are several versions of that other file mode, whcih is the better or secure one?
Other question: is there any risk of data failure or dataloss with other filemodes?
:thanks:

Hi!
Select "DVD-ROM [UDF]"
Hi!
Select "DVD-ROM [UDF]"
UDF...can you maybe tell me some differences, or risks that it has?
*One sec and I will see if DVD-ROM [UDF] is there on the sidepanel! ;) *
DONE! I have the choice between:
Physical, Virtual, Sparing partition.
ver. 1.02; 1.50; 2.00; 2.01;
Now which one is proper? :?

Use UDF 1.02...
Ok, I will test v1.02 on a DVD+RW disc, and i hope my standalone dvd player plays it! :D
Well, which one is better for my data:
1. I burn the the 4,5GB wmv via UDP
2. I split it into several parts
??????
:thanks:

I doubt that your SAP will read udf ...
split the files and burn them in iso mode

Well, which one is better for my data:
A) You did not indicate the brand or disk ID of your media, so your question cannot be answered.
B) A choice of burn settings is more dependent on the drive than the media.
C) A "which is better" question is subjective and is under forun rule 12.
D) Your last question doesn't make sense because you've asked if burning the disk in UDP mode or splitting it into parts, when the whole basis of your thread was to find out how to prevent splitting it in the first place. Instead, you should give the recommended solution a try and see if it works for you. If it doesn't, then come back and post your unsuccessful results. If it does, please report your success.

Since kurt wrote that there is less chance that my dvd player will play UDF dvds, so then I don't waste my time to try. I will split the wmv and burn in ISO mode.
A) Well, right now I burn with LG 4163B on Philips 8X DVD-R (Ritek G05), Fuji 8X DVD+R (Ritek R03), Verbatim 8X DVD+R (MCC 003).
B) I don't exactly know what you mean whith this point! :stupid:
C) Of course it subjective, but i thought it's clear, that i mean with this question that my data won't be lost and maybe that the SAP should play it! :)
D) Yeah, I have to admit, I intended to find out which way would be proper, by splitting or using UDF. But well, if I done everything I will write a conclusion. ;)

@CLSHow to burn files over 2GB on DVD?This was your initial question - and I've already answered it. Select UDF 1.02
In your subsequent posts to this thread, you've now added that:
A) You're talking about a 4.5Gb WMV file (which is too big for a single layer DVD 5 anyway) and
B) You want it to play on a standalone DVD player
I'm not aware of any standalone players that will play WMV files
@kurt
Hi!I doubt that your SAP will read udf ...What do you base your doubt on?
As far as I know, UDF is the underlying format for all standalone DVD players...

It is setarip, standalone dvd players are actually only required to understand UDF. The ISO9660 bridge bit is there for old operating systems really.

OK! They I will write that UDF and see if it plays it! BTW, it's an LG. ;)
A) Sorry, I wrote just a rought size, the exact size is 4,32GB! :p So I guess it's good for DVD5!
B) Lol... :)

Hi!What do you base your doubt on?
As far as I know, UDF is the underlying format for all standalone DVD players...
Some time ago I tested multiple avi files burned in udf on Dk Digital DVD-339 (MediaTek MT1389xx Chip (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=646038#post646038)) and it failed to read.
Let's see, wich result CLS gets :p
(but I will test this again, maybe it was related to some crappy DVD-RWs)

 Well, tonight I will burn the disc anyway, you made me curious! :P
On the player, there is a "Plays Windows Media" stamp.

So, finally here I'm... :)
1) Today, I splitted the WMV into 2 part, each 1,4GB ~ 2CDs. Burn in ISO mode and was totaly successful, my dvd drive could read the disc, but not my LG SAP (LG-DV8600H), just sad "Error - check disc!"
2) Now I burned the whole WMV in UDF 1.02 mode, without splitting it, to a BENQ DVD+RW. Dvd drive also could read and play it, but again the SAP sad just "Error - Check Disc".
3) I will burn the splitted once again, maybe just there were to many IO error, or i don't know.
Or maybe the SAP gave up his will right now. So maybe I will check also if he playes something anyway. :P
3) I burn the parts again on the DVD+RW in ISO mode, and again the same message appears on the screen. Done also the test if it's even still working, and yes it is.
CONCLUSION: LG DV8600H can't read discs with WMV data on it!
I will do this weekend some other test if it just don't like discs with WMV data on it, or aswell it can't read UDF discs. :p

1) Your standalone player may not "like" the media (brand and/or format) you've burned
2) Despite the "Plays Windows Media" stamp, the player may not be capable of playing the specific WMV version/format of your file.
As I said previously, I'm not aware of any standalone players that will play WMV files
If nothing else, at least you now know that UDF (not ISO) can be used to create data DVDs with individual filesizes greater than 2 Gb ;>}

1) Nop, It playes every dvd of that kind, except that one with the wmv on it. (btw it's Philips 8X DVD-R) :(
Yeah, at least i know now that I can use UDF aswell as ISO! :P

It playes every dvd of that kind, except that one with the wmv on it.Then maybe you should read the documentation for your standalone player to understand what is meant by the "Plays Windows Media" stamp you've previously referred to...

Keep in mind that just because the file has .wmv at the end, it isn't necessarily a Windows Media file. I could take any of my .avi files and change the extension to .wmv, but it would make no difference to my computer because they'll both open with Windows Media Player. Try running GSpot on the file and make sure it's really something that falls within the playback specifications of your player.

What software and procedures did you use to create this WMV file?

AsfTools 3.10  Why do you ask?

Why do you ask?I asked as a followup to the suggestion made by "CWR03", that your file may not actually be in WMV format...
By the way, (It's been quite some time since I used it) I thought ASFTools was used exclusively for repairing existing files?

No, I checked it with GSpot, and it's a real WMV. VCodec is WMV3 and ACodec is wmap, as far as i know this counts as WMV, right?!
AsfTools (http://www.geocities.com/myasftools/).
unskinnyboy told me to use this app. Sweet little app, can convert, cut, join and ofcourse as you know repair. :)

Thanks for the link regarding "ASFTools". However, I guess I'm getting more dense as I get older ;>} I see nothing at that site (software descritption and FAQ) that indicates that the program can be used to CREATE a WMV video - repair, convert to .AVI, etc., yes, but to create a WMV file, no. Perhaps you can enlighten me, please? (If it can be used to create WMV files, I might want to add it to my "toolbox")

You mean you can't find the download link on the site? *my english understanding of difficuld sentences is very bad, sorry! :(*
So here is the exact download links, which are on the site aswell, look closer. :P *these are the first two links!*
asftools310.zip (http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bhellst/asftools/asftools310.zip)

I said, "I see nothing at that site (software descritption and FAQ) that indicates that the program can be used to CREATE a WMV video - repair, convert to .AVI, etc., yes, but to create a WMV file, no. Perhaps you can enlighten me, please?"
This means that it does not appear to be that that ASFTools v.3.10 is capable of CREATING WMV files.
How did you use ASFTools v.3.10 to CREATE a WMV file? (Your use of and understanding of English appears to be excellent ;>})

Now I got it....believe me my english is not the best, but maybe i'm just dumb sometimes! *or always :/ :D :stupid:
So....to answer your question. Asfar as I see, there is no option to create WMV files. But don't count my oppinion, becuase I just saw this app about 3 days ago, so i'm far not an expert of using it, but to get to know how to cut the WMV was pretty fast for me, especially since i'm not the brainy one! :P

Asfar as I see, there is no option to create WMV files. You have succeeded in confusing me. So,which is it? Did you or didn't you use ASFTools to create your WMV?
If you didn't use ASFTools to create this WMV file, what program did you use to create this WMV file?

Ohhh...I see, sorry that I confused you. Now you know why my english is bad, I though that ask with your 1st question with which app did I CUT it and not that HOW I MADE THE WMV FILE HIMSELF. So I don't made the WMV, so i don't know anything about making it, I just wanted to cut it into parts so that it fits the ISO under 2GB file size limit, but since there is UDF and my SAP don't plays WMV anyway, so yeah... :(
So sorry if I can't help you how to make WMV-s, I'm want to get familiar aswell with fileformats like wmv, but i'm rahter interested in mp4/mkv, since avi is no longer enought....
