I have a Divx file that has some combing (from bad deinterlacing?) What could I do to minimize this as much as possible?

Re-encode it and deinterlace it properly this time.

Or you could use ffdshow as playback filter and enable deinterlacing there.

I did not encode this video myself and do not have access to the original source.
Can I still do a re-encode and deinterlace?

Re-encoding is always possible, at the cost of loosing video quality though.
That's why I recommended deinterlacing on-the-fly during playback.

I'll try re-encoding and see if the quality is acceptable. Should I use the deinterlace filter in Vdub or is there a better one?
Which mode should I use?

Has the interlaced video been resized? If so, deinterlacing is not going to be useful. Please post a screenshot of the source video from a scene with lots of motion.
