New to Authoring

I will be taking a class in the fall on DVD authoring, but I wanted to go ahead and get my foot in the door beforehand so I can take it easy the first few weeks :)

Any suggestions on readings, software, or sites I should visit?

The obvious thing to do is to get some information on the nature of the course...e.g. is there much focus on asset creation?

And perhaps most importantly, I'd imagine the authoring component of the course content resolves around a specific application (e.g. Scenarist), so find out the name.
